ENCOUNTERING GOD

Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, "Surely the Lord is in this place, and I wasn't even aware of it!" (Genesis 28:16 NLT)

The world was made by God and God is everywhere in the world. There is no place where we are that He is not. Most of us are like Jacob. We are not aware of it! Even after we have been made aware it, we often forget it.
We can spend our whole lives with a form of Godliness without ever encountering God. Well, that is not quite true. We encounter God everywhere; we just do not see that it is God. Perhaps in the womb we got to know Him. As we were cared for as infants we should have experienced His pure love. But along the way things could have changed.
Some people encounter God in the sunrise or the sunset and do not know He is present. They just have a sense of awe at the photo opportunity. What a difference it makes when those things actually become God encounters.
A song rose in my heart when I first came to know God. I had most certainly encountered Him many times and did not know Him but when that changed my perspective changed. I thought about thanking Him when I woke up. Thanking Him for peace and restful sleep and birds outside the window and being able to see and hear them. I thought about how the beaches held the oceans and how mountains stand. I thanked Him for breaking all my chains. An encounter with God opens a person’s eyes to chains they never saw before. Everything was new.
The truth is that we must guard ourselves so that the newness does not get old. We need to continue to encounter God, so that never lose sight of the treasure of His presence.
His value in our lives goes up exponentially with each and every acknowledged encounter. We are told in scripture to praise Him at all times, acknowledge Him at all times, and expect His presence.
Once we have stumbled upon Him, we need be like the person who found the treasure in the field and hid it and went to buy the whole field. Just as the field was there before him to search for more treasure, so it is with our lives in Christ. We have not begun to experience all of the Kingdom of God that is ours in this life time.
Sometimes we stumble upon God’s presence and sometimes we seek for His presence. We can always be sure He is present. He sees needs that we do not know about and He meets them often without us even realizing He has done it. That is why at the end of the day we can praise Him for what do not know as well as what we do know. What we need to know is Him. Make encountering Him your top priority!
