ENOUGH
For we have spent enough of our past life time doing the will of the Gentiles. (1Peter 4:3 NLT)
It is interesting that one definition of enough is; in or to a degree or quantity that satisfies, when in fact, Mick Jager’s old line of “I can’t get no satisfaction,” is probably the most truthful statement outside of Christ. I guess the point of Peter’s statement could be that we have had enough of never really being satisfied and are now ready for the only one who can truly satisfy!
The problem for all of us as Christians is coming to the point of being fed up enough with the things that rob us of our life in the Spirit to actually leave them all behind. We come to Jesus and love Him, but then find that there are some things that are hard to desert from our old life. Yes, there are some things that are just too precious and we feel like it will require more suffering than we are willing to do in order to let them go.
In our hearts we know that is the right thing to do, because the Holy Spirit bears witness that it is the only way to true satisfaction, but everything around us screams that we should not go too far with this kind of thinking! Our natural mind and surroundings join our past in saying that a little of this Jesus stuff is enough and any more than that is too much. After all, you can’t just trust Jesus for everything you still have to keep some control!
The only problem with this kind of thinking is that we fool ourselves into thinking that we were ever in control in the first place. It is truly a nasty treadmill of deceit that we ran on and now it is time to go on with the truth. The “truth” is the one thing that we really cannot get enough of. It is the one thing that truly sets us free. God’s Word is truth. Everything else is a lie in comparison.
But again, it is a battle that we all have fought and must continue to fight in order to experience the Kingdom of God the way that God desires for us to experience it. It comes down to the choice that we all must make daily in our lives. We must continually choose life, and choose not to believe the lies of the past life. Past, is the operative word here. Have I left the past behind? Have I had enough of it? Will I fight to resist it? What is there about it, that I really do not want to give up? Do I really believe that even what I see as good can and will be made better by surrendering to Jesus?
Psalm 19 assures us that it is a good choice to take what the Lord says and leave the rest behind. His instructions are perfect and trustworthy. They bring joy to the heart and revive the soul. They give us insight for living and what He provides last forever. His wisdom is more valuable than even the finest gold, and sweeter than honey. He will warn us of danger and trouble and reveal to us even the things in our own hearts that rob us. It is a lie to say that we cannot find satisfaction in the Lord. He alone is able to give us enough life to truly satisfy us!
