ESCAPE

"Keep a constant watch. And pray that, if possible, you may escape these horrors and stand before the Son of Man." (Luke 21:36 NLT)

Do you ever just want to escape? Of course you do. We all do. We may not always call it that, but the truth is we live to escape. We want to escape sickness and be well. We want to escape the cold and be warm. We want to escape war and have peace. We want to escape poverty with wealth. When we drive in traffic we even want to escape the red lights and have them all be green. Whenever things are not how we want them, we want to escape to what we consider better circumstances.

In this passage of scripture, Jesus is talking about the most important escape any of us will ever make. It is the true great escape. There is much speculation concerning when and how it will all take place. The Bible assures us that no one knows the day or the hour, but we can recognize the signs. Are we in the last of the last days? I don’t know for sure, but it sure looks a lot like what Jesus described. Wars, earthquakes, famines, and miraculous signs, all seem to point to the return of Christ. Jesus said that when we see these things we can be sure that the Kingdom of God is near. He also said that this generation would not pass from the scene until these events take place. I take that to mean that the generation that is here when it starts will see the end.

So, is this the time or not? In truth, only God knows, but Jesus warned us to keep a constant watch and pray that we might escape. The place of real safety and peace is with Jesus. We need to learn to escape to that secret place. When we are weary, sick, or afraid, we must practice our escape. God has laid out the escape route. People all over the world are wondering what is coming next. The devil is doing his best to veil people’s eyes to the only way of salvation. He knows that souls hang in the balance and he wants to steal every one that he can.

However, God does not want anyone to perish. The truth is that everyday there are people who escape this life but not all of them have called on God. Not all of them have escaped to stand with the Son of Man. Those who know the truth must be watching and praying; we must not be caught unaware. We must be prepared at all times for the Lord’s return as well as being prepared to help others escape the worries of this world.

Job said that the most fortunate ones were the ones who were stillborn, who never had to face this world at all. This may be true, but the next best thing is to draw close to Jesus and keep a constant watch. He is our escape route. He is the way to fullness, now in this lifetime and in the end, eternal life. How soon will Jesus return? We don’t know. But we should be watching and waiting, ready to welcome the Lord.

Is your escape planned? Do your loved one’s know the route. Is everyone you know ready? Will you help those who don’t know? Keep a constant watch!
