ETERNAL LIFE

And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.(John 17:3 NKJ)

God’s desire has always been for us to be with Him forever. He promises to care for us, love us, protect and provide for us, FOREVER. His plans were never that we treat Him like a mistress or some one night stand. God is not interested in having a fling with us. He wants to have an eternal relationship. One where we come nearer and nearer and receive more and more of Him. A relationship that we pursue because we are in love.

God does not wanted to be treated like an occasional fling for a good time, nor does he wanted to be treated like the faithful spouse who hangs in there while our affections are poured out on some one else. He wants to be the love of our lives. Many times in scripture, God referred to the behavior of his people as adulteress and accused them of playing the harlot. Why? Because they refused to be faithful to the God who had saved and delivered them.

As we begin a new year, it would be wise for all of us to do a soul check. We should ask God if there are areas where we have cheated on Him, and at the same time cheated ourselves.

We have just gone through a wonderful season of celebrating the Birth of our Lord. It is a season of giving, and that is very fitting, since Jesus was and is the greatest giver of all time. As I was praying about this relationship, and asking God to pour more and more of His presence out upon us, I believe He gave me a picture of just how necessary it is for His people to continually seek more of Him. I saw His children as packages under the tree at Christmas. All looking nice and neat, but if they are not continually drawing closer to God, they would be empty when someone opened them. What a disappointment that would be to a child to look at their package and imagine wonderful things that could be in it, only to find it empty.

Another thing that God brought to my mind about that kind of package is, that if it is empty no one dare shake it, or it would be found out. When we are empty and anyone or anything shakes us a little, we are very quickly found out. And no one likes to be caught empty. It is easy to see how this can become a vicious circle of disappointments, wall building, and lot of crashing. And all of it can easily be avoided simply by seeking God for a greater portion of His presence in our lives. I have heard people saying that things will be divine in 99, and that this will be a year of overflow. If we are in God’s presence, an overflow of His blessings. If we are out of His presence, an overflow of judgment. Those who are in His presence will have much to give to others to help them in their trials. Be a package full of God.
