ETERNAL LIFE NOW
I write to you who believe in the Son of God. I write so that you will know that you have eternal life now. We can come to God with no doubts. (1 John 5:13-14 ERV)
Oh how sweet it is to know we have eternal life now. We do not totally understand it of course, but it is so sweet at the start. It is so good know that our sins are forgiven and that we have been given a new life. We come to God without doubts. We come so sure that that whatever this is that we have found is the best thing ever. But then…
My bride just got a new puppy. It was a rescue situation so what could she do. I personally love puppies; I am a puppy breath addict. So many times I have heard people say that puppies are nice, but they just grow up to be dogs. This is of course very true!
I was sitting with this new puppy and just loving on her and it hit me that God loves me just like a puppy. He just loves me. He just loves us. He loves to be near us and be loved by us. He does not get bent out of shape when we make messes. He is always ready to bless us with a treat. He gently directs us, but mostly He just enjoys us.
I think that is how He intends it to be forever. He just wants to have fellowship with us. Oh yes, we should grow up and mature in areas, but we should not lose that first love. We should maintain that innocence and that assurance that brings us to God without doubts.
Just as some people can only see puppies as something that grows into a dog, it occurred to me that too often Children of God just grow up to be old Christians. Somewhere, the thrill falls away. Then the analytical mind kicks in and spends more time trying to figure out why God does or does not do certain things. And worst of all, it seems that the sheer joy of salvation disappears.
I think dogs really enjoy still being treated like puppies, but it is people who treat them like dogs; if you know what I mean. Puppies as well as dogs are always faithful.
So with Christians, God never changes. He still loves us. The difference is in the way we become if we are not careful. Oh I know some will say we need to grow up and we cannot always go around with that glassy-eyed wonder concerning the greatness of God, but I wonder if that is really God’s desire.
Puppy love is not all bad! Sure it needs to mature in some ways, but it also needs to be stirred up at times. I know how much I enjoyed God when I had no idea what I had found. Thankfully, I find that I enjoy Him even more now that I know a little.
While I sat holding and loving the puppy, it was God said He loved me just like that. He is always holding me and His love never changes. I don’t want to grow up to be some old Christian with no joy, just waiting to get out of here. I want to continually come to Him without doubts. The joy of the Lord is even greater that the joy of a puppy. Enjoy!
