ETERNITY OPPORTUNITY
"Do you believe that I am able to do this?" (Matthew 9:28 NKJV)
Something that dawned on me recently is that the responsibility of our eternity rests squarely upon our own shoulders. I am not speaking of just the time after we die, but of all of our time now and forever. I should say that I have considered this idea much from other angles, but it seems to be funneling down to more narrow corridors of late.
Just today the thought came to me that the thing that we often do that limits us so much is that we base what God will do on the believability of it, when in fact it is our ability to believe that directs the way things play out.
Let’s face it; Jesus did a whole bunch of unbelievable things. He walked on water, raised the dead, spoke to storms, healed every disease, made people whole who had parts missing, and a long list of other things that would fill more books than we could read. Even though the list of things would seem to be unbelievable, they are true. Since they are true, we should believe them. Based on this, I think we could say that our life in the Kingdom of God is directly affected by our ability, and our willingness to believe what God says.
Well of course we all agree with that, until something comes up that we just can’t believe God would or do any more! The truth is that deep down we are not sure that He ever did those things in the first place. How much do we really consider His miracles? Some of the people that were present when He did them did not believe it, so we needn’t feel too bad unless of course we continue to refuse to believe. Still, we really need to consider all of these things and make sure that we have it settled in our hearts that everything He did He is still able to do, and that He is willing to do the same for us!
So here is the deal. Jesus came to destroy the works of the enemy and open the door to His world of opportunity, which is the Kingdom of God. He is our opportunity to be restored to the kind of fellowship God always desired to have with us. God’s determination to have us continues with the gift of the Holy Spirit. Jesus said He would send the Holy Spirit to draw us. The Holy Spirit in us cries, “Abba Father, you can do all things.” He enables us to believe the unbelievable, if we will agree with Him that is!
Jesus asked the blind man if he believed He could give him back His sight. When the man said he believed, Jesus said, “According to your faith, let it be to you.” Wow talk about putting the ball back in his court. We have an opportunity to believe. If we only believe in part, we need to seek until we believe in full. Some things we do not have total clarity on. If we believe we can get clarity on them, we will. If we don’t, we won’t. We cannot just say that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever; we must believe it! Jesus has provided the opportunity in and for all things; the responsibility of believing rests on us.
