EXCUSE ME

When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. (Acts 5:5 ERV)

Wouldn’t it be great if we would respond to the truth quickly and completely? I am not saying we should fall down and physically die, but what if we simply faced the truth and let all of our excuses drop to the ground?

Romans 3:19 tells us that the law stops us from making excuses. As much as we might wish we could, we simply cannot excuse ourselves from God’s plans and ways! We are seeing first hand that the further man tries to remove and excuse himself from the ways of the Lord the worse things get. Yes, God knows what He is doing. He always has!

Our nation was established on biblical principles, but there are those who simply do not want to follow those principles. I truly believe that the majority of people know and prefer what is right whether they are Christian or not. Unfortunately it seems that the majority has tried to excuse themselves from taking a strong stand for what is right in order not to offend the noisy minority.

Think about it. We have a lot of people who want to be excused from having a job and have someone pay them for it. God said if we do not work then we should not eat. This is not to say that we should not take care of people who cannot work, but those who will not work need some enlightenment. We could go on for many pages considering this dilemma, but we need to move on to something even nearer and dearer to God’s heart.

It is easy to look and see where others are falling short, but we need to face the fact that as Christians we often try to excuse ourselves from what is right as well. God never said anything about excusing our sins, He said to repent and He would forgive us. How often are we guilty of treating our sins like they are just a hiccup that we say excuse me for. Sin is sin, so we will do best if we face it, repent of it and quit it! It may be that our greatest sins are the way we excuse ourselves from what God has called us to do, be, and experience in His Kingdom. How often do we in fact excuse ourselves from something we know God wants and yet run to the front of the line wanting His blessing.

Look at Ananias and his wife. They actually were doing a good thing but wanted more personal glory for doing it so they devised a plan that totally blew up. We would do well to be so convicted when we attempt to excuse ourselves from being honest with God. I have often heard and repeated that the day may come when people will start dropping dead in church for lying to God. My prayer is that our excuses will die and we will begin to truly seek all that God wants us to seek and find all that he wants us to find.

I believe it is a failure to grasp what God has in store for those who love Him that leaves us open to making excuses for our actions and excusing ourselves from His ways. We just do not understand how good He is or how much we miss. It is time to quit making excuses and begin to live in the fullness of the Kingdom of God and reveal Him to others.
