FAITH AND FAVOR
It was by faith that Rahab the prostitute did not die with all the others in her city who refused to obey God. For she had given a friendly welcome to the spies. (Hebrews 11:31 NLT)
Rahab acted by faith and gave favor to the spies. They in turn gave her favor along with her family and they were spared when Jericho was destroyed. Isn’t it amazing the way that God does things?
Why do you suppose that the spies went to Rahab’s house in the first place? My guess would be that God led them there. Why did he lead them there? Well Rahab said that they had heard about the miracles God had done for Israel and they knew that God had given them the land. If you read the account of Rahab in Joshua chapter 2, you will see that she was pretty impressed with the God of Israel. Even though she did not know Him, she believed and by faith she hid the spies.
Why does Hebrews list Rahab as one of the Hall of Faith? Well she risked her life in hopes of saving her life. She lied to the king’s servants and hid the enemy. She showed a great deal of faith in the God who she had only heard stories about. Because of this, her house was a good place for the spies to stop.
They had the favor of God resting upon them as they went to spy. Rahab had the favor of God resting upon her so that they came to her. As a result, the spies were spared and so were Rahab and her family. Imagine, a prostitute with faith enough that God would save her, and He even placed her in the Hall of Faith. God has always been in the business of rescuing the perishing. Never underestimate His grace and mercy.
Isn’t it wonderful that it only takes a little faith to gain the attention of our awesome God? When we have God’s attention, we have God’s favor as well. Something that thrills me is that God’s favor rubs off. It spreads just as faith spreads. When I used to paint, we used a fibrous aluminum product. That stuff seemed to spread everywhere. Just when you thought you had it all cleaned off it would show up somewhere else. It was like it just reproduced itself. The favor of God reminds me of that.
God intends for us to walk by faith in His favor. As we do this, others will respond like Rahab did in hopes that the same favor might be theirs. They will do this, because they will hear from us how good God is and how He shows favor to those who will believe.
Remember, the spies went trusting God. Rahab received them trusting God. And everyone was blessed in the process. The sad thing is, the city may have been saved if they had all just warmly welcomed the people of God. God calls on each of us to trust Him, walk in His favor, and spread the Love of God that is in Christ Jesus wherever we may go. Let it rub off, there are people out there waiting.
