FAITH IS NOT A CONTEST

Faith is what makes real the things we hope for. It is proof that we cannot see. (Hebrews 11:1)

So many times people will become discouraged because they are convinced that they just do not have enough faith. They base this on evidence that they can see which convinces them that God is doing nothing to answer their prayers and bring about the changes they are looking for. This often leads to comparing themselves with someone who appears to have more faith than they do and suddenly it becomes a contest. Yet the word of God says that we are all given a measure of faith, so it is not faith that we lack it is the understanding of what we already have.

We will never get someone else’s faith. Our faith may grow as we gain the understanding that they have, but it is not a contest that leads to us being a step above, below, or in a dead heat with another. The truth is the more understanding we gain, the more we should realize how very blessed we are to have it. In my opinion, it is worse for one who has understanding to look down on someone who does not as though they are comparing what they see as their great faith to those with less understanding.

We can be sure that the enemy is continually working to contest our faith and keep us down. This is why scripture reminds us to contend for our faith. Now if we did not have any, why would be warned to contend for it?

We do not win faith. It is a gift that we are given along with the tools to develop it. It is like giving a piece of wood to a craftsman along with the tools to fashion that wood into what the giver desires.

God has given us faith and the Holy Spirit has come with the tool box along with the understanding necessary to create what God desires. As we gain understanding we develop our faith. As we do this, we all develop at different speeds and in different areas. Think of it this way. When people are working out, each one may be working and developing a different group of muscles for different reasons. In our walk with God we are all developing according to our desires and our circumstances. Therefore one person may develop faith to be healed and to pray for others. Another might develop faith to prosper and provide for others. Each has understanding to help the other develop.

As scripture points out, we are the body of Christ. Each one is important. If we find we need to develop in an area then we need to get to work; not lay down feeling defeated before we start. Do not believe the lies the enemy throws at you. God has given us all we need. We simply need to believe. When we believe then we know we have what we do not see and we contend for the promises of God. We declare the God always causes me to triumph in Christ Jesus. No weapon formed against me can prosper. If someone has developed in an area you need; go to them and learn from their understanding. We have all received freely and we should all give freely. Together we contend for the faith of God that is in us through Christ Jesus, our hope in all things.
