FALLING AND FAILING

If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. (1Corinthians 10:12 NLT)

Early in this week I wrote a note simply stating, “keep from falling.” I was reminded of Paul talking about finishing strong and his concern that it would be a sad deal if he did all that he did only to fall down in the end. There are many reminders in God’s word about standing and about failing to stand, and as these things have drifted through my mind, I have felt the need for this to be important in my life and the lives of all believers!

We are told to work out our salvation with fear and trembling. This is not because salvation is unstable, it is because salvation is important enough to pay attention to it. Does my life reveal the importance of Jesus in my life? Do I consider Him in my life enough to pay attention to the tune I am playing? I can’t stand it if my guitar is out of tune, I must stop and get it back in tune.

This morning I shaved my face and my head and came back to wash my hands and as I looked in the mirror, I noticed a couple of longer hairs on my head. As I grabbed a razor to take care of it, I thought about the importance of taking care of things out of place in my walk with God.

I would not have needed to stop and get those hairs. It is quite possible that no one else would have noticed. Still, I did it. I thought if I am not going to overlook a couple of sprouts, how much more should I not overlook little things in my life that could turn to bigger things?

Is my walk with God important enough to pay attention to it? Of course, God is faithful even when we are not; does that mean that I have no obligation to walk as He walked? There is a line that is too fine for us to decide; only God knows.

Salvation does not come because we work but the fullness of it comes with diligence. Is our relationship with God in Christ important enough to us to cause us to pay attention.

We can go through the motions with no emotion! If we only care about God when something comes up that we care more about the way it is affecting us personally, we might need to take time to tune!

We may fail, but we do not have to fall. When I was in college, I worked one summer with a company building a grain elevator. I had nightmares about falling. I would practice landing in my sleep! It scared me! It also made me even more attentive to holding on. If I did not fail to hold on, I would not fall!

God tells us to hold fast, or hold on tight, to the things we know are true. We are in times where it is more and more important to keep a firm grip on our faith. I never would have thought in our country that loving Jesus would be considered hateful! Well, don’t let go of the things that are true in order to move into a more acceptable place. Hold on, He is coming. He will strengthen and rescue you! Yes, it is important to walk at all times in all things as Jesus walked.
