FIX IT
"Why criticize this woman for doing such a good thing to me?" (Matthew 26:10 NLT)
The truth is, sometimes we just do not know any better. Sometimes, we just do not understand. Because of this, we say the wrong things and we get caught. Sometimes we get caught and we fix it, and sometimes we are just stubborn and stick with our own thinking. Well, Jesus has some good advice about this. He basically tells them to fix it. Fix their attitude and fix their thinking and speaking.
He told them she had done a wonderful thing for Him. He also said that this wonderful thing would be shared wherever the Good News was preached. This woman did an extravagant thing for Jesus and it impressed Him. Extravagant things often make others feel uncomfortable, especially when they do not share the same type of thinking.
We know from the gospels that many of those present got the message. We also know that Judas would not let go of his bad attitude. Once again, Jesus had crushed his way of thinking. Unfortunately, this is frequently the response of some to the gospel. They do not want to give up their own way so they reject God’s way.
For today, let’s just deal with how it affects us as believers. You see, we can grow one of two ways. We can grow closer and more in love with Jesus or we can grow cold. Very seldom does the temperature just drop like a South Dakota winter where it can change fifty degrees in a few hours. No, we can just gradually cool off in our devotion to God and the things of God.
It is not like we intentionally do it; other things just get in the way. Remember when Peter rebuked Jesus for his plan and Jesus told him that he was looking more at man’s ways that at God’s ways. Yes, the way of the world can certainly cloud our eyes of faith if we do not stay close and keep pressing in to the love of God.
The best way to fix things is to fix our eyes on Jesus. His plans for us do not change. His love for us never waivers. His understanding of our battles is so complete, that He prays for us continually.
We all fail to get it right all of the time. We all do sin and come short of the glory of God. The question is, do we desire to fix it? Are we determined to grow in love for God? Do we have grateful hearts? Do we take the time to be amazed at all of the wonderful things He has done for us? Are we determined to do whatever it takes to stir that first love up in our hearts, or maybe even to find it in the first place? The key to fixing is staying close to the fixer.
Jesus is the answer in all things and for all things. Draw close. Never draw cold.
