FOCUS ADJUSTMENT

...we tear down every proud idea that raises itself against the knowledge of God. We also capture every thought and make it give up and obey Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:5 ERV)

Have you ever had your mind wander? That is a silly question to ask isn’t it. Of course everyone experiences the wandering mind, and no one notices it more than a person who prays and seeks the Lord. This is because we experience a lot of condemnation when we are seeking God and find ourselves considering everything else but God and His ways.

I was having one of many wander moments recently and when I caught myself I immediately apologized to the Lord and went back to where I was before I began to wander. At this point I was reminded of the above scripture and I began to think that a wandering mind might not be all bad. It is possible to wander to something important and not entirely impossible that it could have been the Lord leading the journey. We can, after all, test the spirit to see if it is God!

Then there is also the fact that the better we get at controlling that wandering, the stronger we will become at overcoming those thoughts and imaginations that come against what we know is true. If we make it our daily practice to make our thoughts obey Christ, when trials come we will be well conditioned to overcome in the power of the Holy Spirit. The key is to be continually adjusting our focus.

In the present digital age, we can take a picture, look at it, erase it, refocus, and take it again. We can do this over and over until we get just what we like. We can even go a step further and use software to touch it up and make it even better or worse depending on what we affect we attempting to create.

Put that in a spiritual perspective and it gives us a whole new light. We can refocus and refocus and refocus! We can keep taking thoughts captive that exalt themselves against the truth until we finally have them obeying Christ. We can receive healing, then get caught up in focusing on symptoms, reject the symptoms, and so on and so on. We can gain victory and then start thinking about it until we have the complete victory and are ready to lead others to victory, or we can refocus the wrong way and come up with a completely distorted picture.

In all of these things, the bottom line is that we have been made more than conquerors through Christ who strengthens us, so if we find ourselves out of focus we simply must readjust our focus again. Don’t get caught in the trap of beating yourself up because you allowed yourself to wander, rather rejoice that you returned to the truth. And by all means, make sure you return to the truth. Do not let anything or anyone or any thought keep you out. We may not know how we got to a certain spot, but we can easily find our way back to the right place. We know the way. Jesus is the way and the Holy Spirit waits to lead us into all truth. Let’s make the necessary adjustments to our focus. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any areas where you might be wandering.
