FOLLOW ME
"Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men."(Matthew 4:19 NKJ)
Is it really so difficult to follow? From the very beginning of time, God has been telling us to follow Him. All Adam and Eve had to do was follow what God said. But they had it easy some would say, all they had to do was stay away from one tree. The fact is, they had it the same as we do. All they had to do and all we have to do is stay close to God.
Have you ever tried to follow someone through traffic because you did not know how to get to a certain place. Because you are unsure of where you are to turn, you want to keep them in sight. What ever they do, you do. What ever lane of traffic they are in you try and get in. When they turn on their blinker, you turn on your blinker. If you lose sight of them, you do something quickly to try and find them. The same is true, if the one you are trying to follow loses sight of you. Are you starting to get a picture of where we are headed here?
Jesus is the Way. He knows the way and all He asks is that we follow. We do not need to try and get out ahead of Him and lead Him in a different way. He will always stay on course. Nor do we have to worry about Him leaving us in the dust. He sees where we are, and if we are headed in a wrong direction He will tell us. He won’t turn us, but He will tell us the right way. If we are determined to just keep going our own way, He will let us go until we realize on our own that we are not anywhere near where we should be. Then if we call, He will answer. Never be to proud to say, “God I was wrong. Help!”
Listening to God and following Him, is not as complicated as we often try to make it. We simply need to keep Him in sight. We need to be confident of His ability to lead us and learn to just follow Him. God asked Abraham to follow Him, and so Abraham did. He did not know where God was leading him, but God said it was a good place and so he packed up and went. Elisha followed Elijah until he could not follow him any more. And Jesus encourages us to simply follow the same way.
When He called His disciples He just said, “Follow Me!” So they followed Him. When He told them to go and do something, they did it. Once in a while they would do some things on their own, like argue about who was greatest, and Jesus would teach them not to do that. He knew their thoughts, just like He knows ours. He willingly corrected them, and we can trust Him to correct us, and to send us when and where He chooses.
He also said that signs would follow those who believed. It occurs to me that signs will follow those who believe that signs will follow, but they will not follow those who do not believe they will. Now think about this. Is there anything you can do to get the things of God to follow you? The answer is no! Just as salvation is a gift through faith, so are all the other things of God. We must simply believe. We must believe in order to follow in the first place. We must believe that God knows what He is doing and where He is leading. Once we rest in this, we can just settle in and follow.
