FOLLOW THE LEADER
God's Spirit has given us life, and so we should follow the Spirit. (Galatians 5:25 CEV)
Have you ever watched a child follow their mother? There is something very special about mother’s, so it is only fitting that we honor them on Mother’s Day by noting that much of what they do is truly is a picture of the way the Holy Spirit desires to lead us.
There really is something special about the way a mother nurses her baby. It is so special in fact that God mentions that He would no more desert us than a nursing mother would desert her child. I realize that not every mother gives in to the instincts God has placed in them and that some who read this may not be able to relate to the idea of wonderful mother. If that is the case for you, I encourage you to let God heal those wounds and allow the Holy Spirit to lead you in this life that you are intended to have and away from all bitterness.
The mothering instincts that God has placed in a mother cause them to desire the best for their children. Even when a mother cannot be next to a child they still want the best. They run to meet every need of the child or they do all they can to see to it that someone else does. A young child will watch their mother, follow their mother around the house and everywhere they go. If a child loses site of their mother they will let someone know that they want to see her again.
I believe we can learn much from a mother’s action toward the child and the child’s desire for the mother as we compare this to the leading and following of the Holy Spirit.
First, we can trust the Holy Spirit to lead and care for us. He does not run out of our sight, nor would He ever desert us. He will do His part. As for our part, if we can learn to lean on and depend upon the Holy Spirit the way that a child does their mother, we will find ourselves experiencing the life that God promised we would have.
Just as a mother cannot always make her children follow her, neither will the Holy Spirit force us to follow Him. Just as our failure to follow our mothers does not change their love or willingness to mother us, so our failure to follow the Holy Spirit does not change His faithfulness to lead.
There is nothing complicated about following someone who wants to keep us close. Just as a mother never tries to lose their child, so the Holy Spirit does not attempt to lose us. Since He has given us life, we should follow Him.
