FOLLOWING JESUS
Then she came and worshipped Him, saying, "Lord help me." (Matthew 15:25 KJV)
There is a difference between reading a book or hearing about someone and actually following them and knowing them. We have all heard about people who got so consumed with a celebrity that they thought the celebrity should return their adoration. Most of the time this ends in a disappointment to the follower. One thing we know without any doubt is that this will not happen to a person who follows Jesus. Actually, He will return far more than we can possible give.
This woman heard about Jesus and decided that He could help her. At first, Jesus said nothing and the disciples told Jesus to send her away because she was bothering them. Even though Jesus said nothing, He was not about to send her away. When He told her that He came for the lost sheep of Israel she was not discouraged. She just kept coming. She got in front of Jesus and bowed down and worshipped Him. Have you ever considered saying something simple like, “Lord help me,” to be worship? Well Jesus did!
When Jesus told her He just could not take the children’s bread and give it to dogs, you would have thought that would be the last straw. Most people would have become pretty insulted at that and walked away disgusted, but not this woman. She was convinced that Jesus was the answer to her problem. So much so, that she believed even crumbs from the table would be enough. How Jesus must have rejoiced to hear this faith and to reward her with what she came for.
Jesus rewards faith! That is all there is to it. In 1John the first chapter he explains that what they are writing is not just concerning someone they heard about, but rather about what they knew and what they had experienced and even touched concerning the Word of Life.
We also can enter into this Word of Life. We can experience and touch Jesus. We will never have to settle for crumbs, but we can be confident that even a crumb is enough to restore life. Many years ago my wife and I along with our oldest son attended a large crusade. One night after the meeting we were getting ready to go to sleep when our son said that we should all hold up our hands for Jesus to touch us and so we did. In a short while, my son said that Jesus had touched his hand. Wow was I jealous! I kept waiting, but I did not get the touch that night. I believe the difference was that my son was waiting to be touched and I was going along with my son because I thought it was really cute.
I learned a great deal from that incident and have learned much more since, but I never want to let what I learn about Him keep me from following and worshipping Him. Don’t let silence, trials, or anything else keep you from Him. Follow Him, touch Him and experience Him. He promises never to disappoint us.
