FOR THE COMMON GOOD
But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. (1 Corinthians 12:7)
God is good, so it stands to reason that His gifts are good as well. Everything about God is good. Often times, people get caught up in His gifts and forget His fruits which in fact are gifts as well. The fruit of the spirit quite possibly produces more in the Kingdom of God than the gifts.
Of course God’s plans and purpose for the gifts are that they produce fruit and at the same time, the fruit will multiply the gifts. The key is to understand that all things of God are for the common good.
No one who operates in a gift is supposed to think to highly of themselves because that gift came from God.
When it comes to fruit, it is not about trying to produce fruit; it is about remaining in Christ. If we do, the fruit will be what we produce.
Galatians chapter 5 lists the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit. As I considered this I had a question come to mind. What spills? In the course of our lives things come up and things happen and when they do, what do we produce.
Scripture tells us to be filled and keep being filled with the Holy Spirit. The goal is to be overflowing with love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, and self control. We all manifest these things sometimes and sometimes we don’t.
I think it is safe to say that these fruits are easier to manifest in some situations than in others and toward some people more than others. For instance, we might have more patience with a stranger than with someone in our family.
Jesus was consistent in the manifestations of the gifts and the fruit because He maintained constant in his devotion to His father. Consequently, He told us to remain in Him. He said that we could do nothing without Him, which implies that we should not attempt to do anything without Him.
We are all works in progress and we will progress in the direction that we desire to progress. The Holy Spirit empowers us to remain in Christ. He gives us the power and leaves us with the free will of what we will produce. The Spirit of God in us continually reminds of the common good that God has planned and that God desires. The Lord is speaking to us. The world needs Jesus!
