FOR THE LORD AND FOR GIDEON

Then all three groups blew the horns in their right hands, and they all shouted, "A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!" (Judges 7:20 NLT)

With this declaration, Gideon and 300 men accomplish the will of God in a miraculous way. Isn’t it true that we all imagine at one time or another doing some great thing for the Lord? Usually when we do we immediately overcome those thoughts with what we consider to be the reality that it just won’t happen. No doubt everyone is familiar with the account of Gideon in the Bible, but if you are not, read Judges chapters 6 through 8.

Gideon did not start with this cry for battle. No, He started hiding in a wine pressing using it to thresh out a little grain to keep from starving. We know that Israel, in a state of starvation cried out to the Lord and in response the Lord sent a prophet to explain to them why they were in this mess. (6:1-10) It may just be that Gideon was pondering all of this as he threshed out the grain, or it may be that he was not thinking of it at all. But there he was when the Angel of the Lord appeared saying, “Mighty hero, the Lord is with you!” Gideon then asks why they are in this mess if God is with them. The angel does not bother to go over all the reasons again, he simply tells Gideon that it is time for Israel to be rescued and he is going to be the one to do it.

As we study the bible, we find that God seldom picks people the way that men do. We all love stories of people rising from lowly places, but we seldom expect it to happen for us. Gideon’s own appraisal of himself was that he was the least of the least. As Christians, we should be humble, but we should also realize that we are sons of the king. For this reason, we can do anything that God calls us to do and we should in fact expect Him to call on us at any moment. We should be ready to do His will. No matter where we are or what we are doing, we should be ready. Gideon was getting food for his family when the Lord came. The first thing Gideon did was make an offering to the Lord and ask the Lord to prove it was really Him.

Gideon’s first assignment was to destroy the idols of the town. This was not going to be popular and it would in fact put him and his family in danger. But God went out before him and it went smoothly. This gave Gideon confidence. God will do the same for us. When God calls, He provides. He goes out ahead smoothing the path. When Gideon called together an army there were more that 30,000 who came to help. But then there was a small bump in the road! At least that is what it looked like. God did not want that many helping. He wanted it to be obvious that God gave the victory.

Remember, God wants to show Himself powerful in our lives, just as much as we would like Him to be powerful in our lives. God had the whole victory prepared before Gideon and his men broke the jars and shouted. What God promised in the beginning was already a sure thing. Everything that God promises in His word is already a sure thing for all who will believe it. Expect God each day to use you like a hero. There are people all around you waiting to see the Lord revealed. God is with you! Begin to act like it!
