FOREVER

He has remembered His covenant forever. The word which He commanded...(Ps.105:8 NKJ)

Forever! That is a long time. We can throw the word around, but we really have no concept of what forever is. To a child, a two hour car ride is forever. People make marriage vows that are supposed to be forever. Some people think they have had the same job forever, and etc. All of these things of course depend upon a human perspective. That is probably why even Christians have a hard time seeing God’s words in His perspective. And if Christians struggle with it, no wonder the world has a hard time understanding where we or God are coming from.

You see, in the natural perspective, people see change as the only thing you can depend on. When things are bad, people depend on it getting better. When things are good, people depend on it not lasting. Silly isn’t it. Isn’t it even sillier that Christians get roped into thinking the same way as the world does. We need to stop it! Why? Because God’s word is forever.

He says that He chose us. He also said that He would write His laws on our hearts. Yes, His laws. Remember, Jesus came to fulfill the law, not cancel it. We are not bound by the law, we are free to keep it. We can be free from idols, from taking the Lord’s name if vain. We can actually be free to worship God and put Him first in our lives. Now days the world is so lax when it comes to respect. But we can be free to honor our parents. Yes even if you have parents who you do not feel are worthy of honor or respect. God wants you to do it, because He said so. We do not have to murder, or lie, or steal, or commit adultery. We can even be free from covetousness. Yes, those do sound a bit like the ten commandments. What would happen if the world started living by them again. God’s blessings would flow for sure.

Now we know God remembers His covenant forever. How long do we remember? What do we remember? Do we only remember when it is convenient and fits into our life plans? Or do we conform our life plans to what God says? I know we all miss the mark at times, but that certainly should not be our intention.

God made a covenant to care for us. He kept His promise even though it cost Him His Son to do it. He also said that if He went so far as to give His Son to accomplish His purpose, what good thing would He ever withhold from us. Once you pay that dearly for something, you sure are going to take good care of it.

He paid a tremendous price to seal the covenant with us. No wonder He reminds us in His word that His promises are forever. Really forever!! Not only can we depend on His promises, but we are also enabled to keep His word. It is not legalism to keep His word, it is the only place that true freedom exists. After all, His promises are based on His Word. So if we do not believe and adhere to the Word of God, how can we ever expect to receive the fulfillment of it.
