FOREVER
The grass withers, the flower fades, but the Word of our God stands forever. (Isaiah 40:8)
Have you ever noticed that forever means different things to different people? To a child it takes forever to get anywhere when you are traveling. When someone is hungry they may say it has been forever since they last had anything to eat. If we are expecting to hear from someone we feel like we have waited forever. People say they will love someone forever and it turns out they will love them until they decide to stop loving them. It is no wonder that we have a hard time grasping that when God says forever, He really means forever and forever is not something that can be measured.
Forever is like God, in that forever had no beginning and will not end. It is something that really is foreign to our natural ability to comprehend. We are more geared toward saying that nothing lasts forever. We don’t really expect anything to last forever. If we declare that something will, there will be someone there who will laugh and say don’t count on it. Of course food spoils, people get older, cars and clothes wear out, and etc. but the Word of God goes on forever. And when He speaks, the natural things have to comply. For instance, sandals and clothes wear out, unless of course God says other wise. When Israel was in the wilderness for forty years their clothing did not wear out.
Also, in this world there is sickness and most people figure everyone has to get sick. But if God says we do not have to then we do not have to. If we do, He says by the blood and name of Jesus we can be healed. We then can either stand on what He says or what natural thinking and understanding says. If the doctor says you are going to die, you can agree with him, or you can choose to stand on the Word of God. I know that people still die, but I also know that those who die standing on the word of God live forever with Him.
It is because His word is forever, that we must continue in our faith in God. This is why we must remain fixed on His word never ceasing to ask, seek, and knock. This is why we must continue to grow in the grace and the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. There is so much around us that attempts to convince us that there is no forever and thus there is no God. If we give up on forever, then all we have is now, and now can sometimes be pretty empty.
If we allow forever to be reduced to our own ability to understand, then we also limit God’s word and His ability to do all He promises. But if we believe God, then we know that what He says stands forever. If we hunger and thirst after all He has promised, He says we will be filled. Nothing in the world gives us a guarantee like that. Everything we now possess can be gone in an instant and we can be left standing with nothing. But if we are standing on God’s word, even if everything around us disappears we still have the firm foundation to rebuild on. And we know from His word that He restores in a pressed down, shaken together and overflowing measure. That promise is forever!
