"Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed." (John 8:36 NKJV)

When we discussed dependence on God, we ended saying that dependence on God was the key to true independence. This is because total dependence on God sets us free from dependence on anything or anyone else. This was perfectly summed up by Jesus when He said, “If the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”

Jesus sets us free to depend on one and only one. Without Jesus, we are dependent on any of a number of things. The more things we are dependent upon, the more things there are to let us down. Without Jesus, every time a person disappoints us we are damaged with no permanent source of repair. If we are dependent on money, we are crushed if the supply stops. You know as well as I do, that there is a long list of things that people develop a dependency upon that simply cannot satisfy them, and ultimately instead of creating freedom in their lives it leads to bondage and often to total destruction.

Think about this. Every person, place, or thing, other than Jesus, is destined to disappoint and potentially destroy us. An obvious example is a person who depends on drugs thinking they will provide freedom? The drugs eventually rule their life. When one drug no longer satisfies, there has to be another until they are dependent on the very thing that is destroying them.

Of course, we can all see how foolish drugs are, unless of course they are legal drugs! The truth is there are may be just as many people if not more who are in bondage to legal drugs and do not see how they are being destroyed. Of course, drugs and alcohol are not the only things that lead to destruction.

Right now in our nation and the world, we are witnessing the destructive power of greed. Without Jesus, money can and does become intoxicating. Why else would someone with more money than they could ever spend have a need to rob people of their life savings?

The devil fools people into believing that he can set them free from the need of anything else. We can easily see that this all started in the garden when Adam and Eve gave up their dependence on God. That trade put all of creation into bondage. Fortunately God, because of His great love, made a way for us to be truly free once again.

Through Jesus, we have the path back to dependence on God. He will never hurt us. He will never disappoint us. He will never put us in bondage. If the Son has made us free, then we are free indeed. We can now spend the rest of our lives walking out this wonderful freedom. It will take all eternity to experience all the freedom Jesus gives us. Start enjoying it now. It is for freedom that He set us free!
