FUTILE PLANS
Why did the nations rage? Why did the people waste their time with futile plans? (Acts 4:25)
It is always easy to see that someone else has futile plans, but it is not so easy when it comes to our own! We can see that there is much plotting going on to remove the name of Jesus from public view. I wonder if they wonder why He bothers them so much? Why are people so busy trying to make terrorists comfortable, but don’t care how they treat the name of Jesus. I guess they know He won’t tell folks to kill someone in order to get to heaven! We know those plans are futile and that in the end everyone will know it, but what are doing to insure that our plans are not futile.
Have you ever considered that any plan that does include Jesus is a futile plan? What good can a plan be if we leave Him out? The sooner we get in the habit of including Him in our plans, the better off we will be. Some people cannot see why they should consider God at all. Others think He should be considered sometimes and still others agree that He should always have top priority.
There is no denying that many futile plans can appear successful on the surface. After all, even a bank robber can have some success for a while! Scripture confirms that even sinful plans produce pleasure for a season. But even the nicest plans if they do not include God are ultimately futile. If we can accept that, we are on the way to more fruitful and prosperous lives.
The disciples acknowledged that the nations were coming against Jesus and His word. They were facing persecution and death and yet they were determined not to be caught up in futile plans. They knew that they would need great power from God to stand strong and to overcome the opposition from without and from within. In their own strength they could not stand. In their own strength they would end up moving toward futility, but with God’s power they knew they could stand.
They had witnessed how the miracles of Jesus changed people and opened their hearts to God’s message and so they prayed asking God to give them great boldness. They asked that He send healing power and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of Jesus. Honestly, Christianity without power is pretty futile. It is a form of godliness, but what does it produce? More often than not, it is the biggest resister to the power of God and the truth of His word.
As we head into a new year, I am praying that God would keep me from futile plans. I would like to see an increase of healings and miraculous signs and wonders done in the name of Jesus. I would like to see His message confirmed and many brought into the Kingdom of God as a result. Remember, Jesus wants to speak through our lives. Let’s ask Jesus to head up all of our plans. If we do, I believe we will behold the glory of God.
