GET A LIFE
Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God's Son does not have life. (1 John 5:12)
This is a very familiar scripture to folks who read the Bible. Anyone who has been to a funeral may or may not have heard it. In fact, it is quite possible that almost everyone at one time or another has told someone or been told by someone to “Get a life,” without ever considering scripture.
I was preparing to have prayer with a family at a funeral when I had this thought about life. We all know that one day we will die. Everyone does! The question is, did we have life.
We hear how people lived their lives to the fullest and more often than not, these references are made about people who made some big splashes or partied hardy or any of a number of things, but did they have life.
There was an old song (Tracks of my Tears) about a person they called of the life of the party, but if you took a good look at his face you would see a smile out of place and with a closer look you’d see the tracks of his tears.
The truth is we could live a hundred years and not have life. According to God we must have His Son in order to have life. So the question is not about living about having life.
We all have the opportunity to transform living into life. Jesus came that we might have life. He went so far as to call it abundant life. Before I met Jesus I would have been one to say that I was really living. I was doing what I wanted to and being any way I wanted to be. The problem was if I was honest about it, the more I went my direction the more miserable I became and was probably making those closest to me miserable as well.
I am thankful for the life that is in Christ. The more I considered this life, the more I realized that life is a continual decision. Once we have the life we need to nurture that life. What I mean is that Jesus told us that we are the light of the world and to let that light shine. There are more than enough things around us that attempt to diminish this life. We need to be willing to look at ourselves and acknowledge when we are not displaying His life. So not only to the lost need to get a life, but those who have life need to live the life that is in Christ Jesus.
Sometimes it is easier for those who have to no life to recognize their need of something more, than it is for those of us who think that we have life to be willing to admit that we may just have that life stored in the closet. Life does not live in a closet. The difference between living and having life is as clear and night and day. Never get comfortable in the darkness. Get the life that is in Christ Jesus and live it.
