GET BACK
Get thee behind me Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men. (Matthew 16:23 KJV)
I think it is worthwhile to note that the Amplified Bible says, “You are in my way [an offense and a hindrance and a snare to Me]” and the New Living Translation says, “You are a dangerous trap to me.” Those are some pretty strong words. This must be serious!
If only Peter had thought before He spoke! Have you ever been in Peter’s position? Have you ever been right-on one minute and clear out in left field soon after? No doubt we are all guilty, but we should learn from these times and move on with God.
It usually helps us to improve when we realize the seriousness of our offense and the cost to the kingdom of God as well as to us personally. It helps to realize that man’s thinking usually gets God’s way. We may think that no one can get in God’s way, but that just is not true. I think that we are often guilty of playing way too of good of defense against what God really wants to do! God may be headed for the end zone with our score and we step in and stop Him. He may be ready to intercept the devils pass and we set a pick allowing the enemy to score. Wasn’t this just what happened with Peter? Jesus was telling them the plan that was going to defeat the devil once and for all and Peter didn’t like the plan. If Peter had his way, no one would be saved!
It is always a snare and a dangerous trap when we begin to entertain those things that sound more appealing than what God has said. It is always a hindrance when people begin to question whether God really meant what He said. Remember, that is how problems started in the Garden. Never let questions turn to doubt and unbelief.
In truth, the last thing any of us want to do is hinder God. We need to learn to recognize when we are and instead of stepping in God’s way when He is headed to score, step back, or as the Bibles says, “be still and behold the glory of God.” When God is ready to stuff the devil on your behalf, don’t just stand there, be ready to pick up the ball and go score.
Listen, if Jesus said that Peter’s suggestion was that much of a snare to Him, how much more are such things a danger for us? Worst off all, I believe it hurts God. Yes we not only hinder God and get in traps that hurt us, but we also hurt God. He desires our love, admiration, and trust. How can we think we know better than God? God never intended that we choose natural over super natural thinking. We have the mind of Christ! It would be nice if God just disconnected our own thinking? Unfortunately, He gives us the choice of what we will believe and do. We need to learn to get back and not hinder God.
