GET IT
And He said to them, "Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables?" (Mark 4:13 NKJ)
“I just don’t get it!” How often have you said or heard these words in your lifetime? As children growing up we are told things and we don’t always grasp it the first time. Then we get older and think we know more, but still we find ourselves scratching our heads about one thing or another. I think it is safe to say that this never really ends in our natural lifetime. If we are going to grow, we are going to need to continue to “get it.”
This is especially true when it comes to walking in the light of God’s word. We must first understand that His word is the source of life. If we do not understand this, then we will never see the importance of walking in the Truth. In Matthew, Mark, and Luke, we read Jesus’ account of the parable of the sower. Mark records the fact that Jesus basically told them “if you do not understand this, you will not understand anything.” Since this parable is recorded three times and Jesus says if we miss it we will miss everything, it would seem we should seek Him till we “get it!” Needless to say, there is much that I still do not get, but I do understand where to go to get it. I know you understand this as well. However, it sometimes takes a little jolt to inspire us to keep moving.
Sometimes in life, people who say they don’t get it, just give up. There are quite a few things that I have been more than willing to leave in the hands of those who do get it. For instance, I am perfectly willing to use this computer without understanding how in the world all of the parts work! Everyone has different gifts from God and there are some things that each person can do that others cannot. So when it comes to things in the natural world I don’t have to understand everything. In the realm of God’s word this is not the case. We all need to “get it” if we are going enjoy the benefits of the things of God.
Jesus said that the word of God is a seed. It is always good and it will always produce. Every seed in the Word will germinate. We do not need to wonder about that. In fact we must be convinced of this fact or we will experience very little of the life in the Word of God.
On the other hand, being convinced of this fact will make us pretty good soil. We will not just stand around waiting for someone to throw some seed at us. We will be going right to the source and getting our own seed. We will gather wherever there is an opportunity to pick up some seed. We will carry extra storage along with us so as not miss anything. We will be constantly sowing as well! Why will we do this? We will do it because we “get it!” We will understand that there is a harvest in every word, and we will guard it to see that we do not miss on single thing. “Get it?”
