GET IT
Jesus asked, "Didn't I heal ten men? Where are the other nine? (Luke 17:17 NLT)
I think we have all experienced one of those; oh I get it now moments. I love it when I see a child’s eyes open up as they suddenly understand something. We are all like children to God so we can well imagine how He loves it when we get it.
In this passage of scripture, there were ten lepers who cried out for mercy and they all receive something from Him. However, there was only one who got the main thing and came back worshipping and thanking Him.
Whenever we go to God, we get something; the question is, do we get the main thing. I went to church for almost half of my life for no other reason than it was what we did. No doubt there was something I was getting; I just did not get it. But then, I got it! Once I got it, I learned to expect it. When we get it, it is greater than all those other things. It is life to those find it and health to all flesh. It is greater than those other its’ that we cannot overcome on our own.
The lepers went to Jesus because they heard that He did amazing things and being a leper was not a great thing. Jesus simply told them to go to the priests and show them what they received and they were healed as they went. Nine of them just kept going to the temple.
Makes me think of how I went to church and then just kept going my own way. I did not really expect anything when I went and I left with what I expected. I hoped it gave me some good points to counteract my bad points, but I just kept going the same way.
One of the lepers realized that there was more than healing to what just happened. There is something special that takes place when we understand that there really is a fullness of salvation to be explored.
There is more than the temple. There is more that going and making a show. I remember how people would talk about some person who came to church just before it began and marched to front to sit down. As a child I never really understood what the murmurs were about, but I think I get it now!
In the case of the lepers, they were not allowed anywhere near the priests in their condition but now they were on a mission to show off. You might say that they were just doing what Jesus told them and that is true. But where was their gratitude. Were they just interested in the priest’s approval now? I do not know what exactly they were thinking, but I do know what the one was thinking. He understood the most important thing. He realized that it was not just what was done for him; he understood that something had been done in him as well and it was the most amazing thing. He went back full of thanksgiving and praise. Get it?
