GET THE WORD OUT

But only speak a word and my servant will be healed. (Matthew 8:8b NKJ)

I don’t know about you, but when I see something that impresses Jesus, I want to find out how I can do the same thing. More and more we are challenged to understand the importance of getting God’s Word out where it will accomplish what God intended in the first place. Even in the natural world we understand that what we say has an effect on things. A leader making a speech can determine the direction of all the financial markets. A word rightly spoken can produce great things and a word spoken wrongly can get a person arrested.

I can remember years ago when I was a huge Colts fan and Joe Namath declared the Jets were going to win. Boy, talk about words causing turmoil. The worst part for Colt fans was that what he said came true. There are many other examples that we could name but suffice is to say that words can and do make a difference. Makes you wonder why so many people take exception to the idea of speaking the word of God boldly and expecting God to do what He said He would do.

How would you feel if you offered your child, spouse, friend, or even a stranger your help, but they never bothered to let you know when they needed the help? Then to make things worse they told people that you said you would help but you never showed up. I think you get the picture.

Often times my wife will ask me to vacuum the house and I always say I would be happy to do it. However, I do not always do it immediately and before long I will hear the familiar sound of her doing it herself. I was still planning to do it and would have done it. Had she mentioned that it needed to be done in the next ten minutes I probably could have and would have done it right away!

Now lets look at what happened in Matthew chapter 8. First a man with leprosy comes and declares to Jesus that if he wants to He can heal him. Jesus responds to this mans declaration telling him that He will heal him and simply says, “be cleansed.” Immediately the man was cleansed and headed off to show the priests. Next comes the centurion asking on behalf of his servant. Jesus offers to go along with him, but the man says it is not necessary. He understands the authority that Jesus has to speak and change things. Why? Because he is a man of natural authority, and he knows that he must do what his superiors say and all those who serve him must do what he says. Based on that, He recognized that Jesus was linked to the highest authority of all, so all he needed Jesus to do was, “speak a word!” This impressed Jesus then and it still impresses Him today.

I believe that God is calling on us to grasp this very thing. He wants us to believe and to speak the truth and not allow anything to keep us from getting the Word out for ourselves and for the benefit of others. We must quit making it look like God is not dependable and that we cannot be certain what mood He is in or if He will show up when we call. The truth is He often shows up even when we do not bother to call! How much more then when we do call?

He said to receive His Word engrafted. In other words make it such a part of you that His words become your words. Get the word out and see what the Lord will do. The leper and the centurion both had great results. So will you!
