GETTING THERE
But when the young man heard this, he went away sad, for he had many possessions. (Matthew 19:22)
Is there something you hope God won’t ask you for? Is there something you hope He won’t ask you to do? Are the circumstances that are just too much for you? I think we all have things that we do not even like to think about. If we love God we want to be totally surrendered, but the truth is we are all just getting there.
Just when we think we have arrived, we find out our journey is extended. It is kind of like running to your gate to catch your flight only to see that the gate has changed and off we go again. The key is to keep going. Don’t give up. We will get there as long as we really want to get there.
The young man is this passage of scripture just went away. We can only hope he reconsidered and came back to follow Jesus once again.
The disciples must have given Jesus a look after this, because Jesus quickly explained that it is difficult to enter the Kingdom of God if we have anything that we value more than our relationship with God. That is what getting there is all about. As we go and as we grow, we discover things that are blocking our way and we simply need to move them out of the way.
Years ago I had a dream about a place. It was an amazing place. It was a place that God keeps reminding me of and as He reminds me it is like I see more of the dream.
Recently it occurred to me that the place I dreamed of has actually been the place I have been ever since I met Jesus. It is the place that we all enter through Christ Jesus. We enter the Kingdom of God. It is an amazing place where everything is God. It is all about God. It is all from God and for God. We just don’t know it all! In fact it is as though we do not know it at all.
Things we see as complicated are actually already handled. All we have to do is get understanding. The amazing thing is once we understand we have a hard time figuring out how God did what He did or does what He does.
Have you ever managed to get something to work but you are not sure what you did to get it to work? Somehow it just worked! I have put things together and they fit just perfectly. I have also made the mistake of trying to do it again and it did not work the same way. I have seen people spend so much time trying to figure out how God did something that they talked themselves out of believing it was God who did it.
Jesus concluded this little teaching by saying, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible.” The place we are trying to get is total trust in God. Enjoy the journey.
