GIANT REALITY

David said to Saul, "People shouldn't let Goliath discourage them. (1 Samuel 17:32 ERV)

David knew that Goliath was big; that was a giant reality. However, David also knew that God was even bigger, and because of that he said that they should not let Goliath discourage them. An old Hymn reminds us that we should never be discouraged; we should just take things to God in prayer. That hymn was based on the Word of God which always was, is, and will be, the greater reality.

I heard man this week say that we can choose what we think and consequently we can choose what we say. In other words, we have time to consider things. We have time to measure our thoughts and our words with what God says, and we can do far more than we think or are willing to admit at times if we will simply choose the greater reality.

I read a quote this week that was a perfect fit with this thinking. “We can only release the benefit of God’s rule flowing through us to the degree that His rule is over us.” Wow! Read that again and think about it. Put that together with 1 Samuel 15:23 “Refusing to obey is as bad as the sin of sorcery. Being stubborn and doing what you want is like the sin of worshiping idols.”

Now let’s move ahead to Jesus telling us that in this world there will be trouble but at the same time He reminds us that the best way to handle it is to look at the greater reality, and that is that He has already overcome the trouble. It is handled. Remember we can always remind ourselves that we have God.

Galatians 5 reminds us that we must give up our old selfish ways. We do this because we belong to Christ. He does not say it will be easy. He just says we better do it. It is selfish to deny God’s reality. When we do that we are no good to ourselves or anyone else. In Galatians 3, he reminds that God worked miracles around the believers because they heard the message and believed.(vs5) Then in Ephesians 4, Paul gives us some great advice. He warns us to stop living like people who do not believe. Then in Ephesians 4:17-26 we are reminded how we should live and finally in verse 27, Paul says, “Don’t give the devil a way to defeat you.”

All of Saul’s army hid in defeat because of the giant Goliath, until David came and refused to let him bother him. If we are going to live in all that God desires for us, we are going to have to get our acts together. We will need to get over some things. We will have give up some things. We will have to make the right choices.

We will need to think with the mind of the Spirit and act accordingly. In order to do that we need to choose what He says and do what He says. Have you ever considered that the very worst thing that can happen to a Christian only makes them better? Death for us is swallowed up in victory. Which reality will we choose?
