GIVING

Then a poor widow came by and dropped in two pennies. (Luke 21:2 NLT)

Like it or not, God pays attention to our giving. Jesus had high praise for this widow who had given everything, however He was not impressed with those who made a big deal out of giving out of their surplus. As I read this I thought, “God have I ever really given till it hurt.” Just that quick, God let me know that he was not at all interested in people hurting as they give. The Lord loves a cheerful giver. It is not much fun if it hurts! Of course it hurts some people to give at all, but that is not God’s plan.

This woman gave because she loved God and she believed God. She may have been poor financially, but she was rich in faith. She put herself in the Lord’s hands. That is a wise thing to do. The truth is, everything is set in motion by giving. God makes it clear in His word that we reap what we sow. God not only sees what we give, but He sees our attitude as we give as well. We must not give because we feel like we are obligated. We should give because we understand what an opportunity it is.

I am sure we all understand that giving does not involve just our money. We all have other things in addition to money that we can give. The truth is that what ever we have is God’s. Our money, our abilities, our time, our gifts must all be on call waiting for God’s direction.

Our life with God begins with our giving ourselves to Him. He gives us our salvation, and we agree to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. This opportunity came about because God loved us all so much that He gave His only Son in the first place.

It is no wonder that satan tries so hard to keep people from understanding giving. The devil hates giving because he is a thief. We should not be uncomfortable with the thought of giving. Those who understand it rejoice at every opportunity because they realize that it begins the motion of receiving. We don’t give in order to get, but we would be foolish to refuse what God promises us. A person certainly does not feel badly about getting paid for work they have done. We don’t tell the bank to keep the interest earned our money. In the same way, we need to understand God’s economy of sowing and reaping.

His system works in every area of our lives. We can give a smile and make a persons day. We can give the time it takes to help someone in need. We can give the love of God and the peace of God everywhere we go. What ever our hand finds to do, we do it as though we are giving to God. The truth is, it never hurts to give, if we give understanding that it is God’s will for our lives. If you feel like you are missing some of God’s blessings, start the cycle with giving. Ask God what you can give or tell Him what you would like to give. Try giving with great joy and excitement, expecting God to guide you into all truth and understanding in His plan for giving.
