GOD HEARD HIS PRAYERS

While Jesus was here on earth, He offered prayers and pleadings, with a loud cry and tears, to the one who could deliver Him out of death. And God heard His prayers...(Hebrews 5:7 NLT)

Who did Jesus depend on while He was on the earth? Sometimes I think we forget that He was a man subject to temptation and pain. Even though the Bibles says clearly that this is true, it is hard for us to see Jesus as anything but all-powerful. After all, He healed all diseases, cast out devils, walked on water, fed thousands, and raised the dead, just to mention a few of His accomplishments. Still, this scripture tells us that He cried out to God and God heard Him because of His reverence for God.

In Hebrews chapter four, we are told to go boldly to God to receive mercy and grace to help in our time of need. Then in Chapter five, God explains that Jesus was called by God to do what He did, just as we are all called by God to do what God wants. So how did Jesus do all He did? He depended on God. Jesus had times where it was just too hard. He had times where He did not know what to do next. He also knew where to go to get all He needed.

Jesus never stood and said that He was doing anything in His own power. He continually pointed out that God was the source and the one who should receive the Glory. He went so far as to say that only God is good. These things are all written to help us learn!

In Hosea chapter six, God told the people He did not want there sacrifices, He wanted their love. He said, “I don’t want your offerings, I want you to know me.” Jesus came so that we could know God. He came so that we would see how to properly honor God and do the things that God has called us to do.

It makes no difference what our calling is; we need to totally depend on God. From domestic engineers to rocket scientists, from laborers to Presidents; we still must place all our hope and trust in God.

God gave Jesus the opportunity to lay down His life for our salvation and then to take that life back up in order to be our advocate. In the same way, God gives who so ever will, the opportunity to lay down our lives and be born again into His kingdom. To simply say that we are Christians does not make us Christians. Depending on God and following Christ’s example is what makes us Christians.

All of the things that Jesus did came as a result of His dependence on God. He did not do the things in order to prove Himself; God did the things in response to His reverence. Jesus did not come to prove anything; He came to reveal the goodness of God and to show us how to fulfill our callings. We do not have to prove anything either, we simply need to love, know, and trust God, and He will reveal Himself to us and through us.
