GOD SO LOVES YOU

Yes, God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him would not be lost but have eternal life. (John 3:16 ERV)

As I was focusing on my love for God I found myself trying to pinpoint when I actually began to love Him. At first I was like a water skier holding on to the rope with no idea what it was all about. It just seemed that this boat was taking me to a good place and I could not let go even though I did not know why I did not want to let go. I guess I thought if I let go I would sink and be lost. I did not realize at the time that God had brought the boat by lots of times to try and get me up on the skis. I felt like this was my only chance and I could not let go.

I knew that the bible said I was supposed to love Him more than anything but I had no idea how that would come about. All I know for sure is that somewhere along the way love happened. Truly we love because He first loved us. Even though I do not know the day that the change took place, I know it did. I know that I quit following out of fear of sinking and began to love and enjoy God more than anything. I am sure I do not love Him perfectly but that is my goal.

One thing I know is that the more I love God, the more I can see how much He loved me all along and how much more love He has to show me. All He wants in return is my love and trust. That is all He wants from anyone.

Remember when Jesus came to visit with Peter after His resurrection. That was a day when Peter understood how much he was loved. He knew Jesus was the Christ. He knew that He was the Word of Life and that He needed to follow Him, but I believe it was that day when He understood just how deep God’s love was for Him. It changed Peter’s life just as it changes our lives when we understand His great love for us.

When we come to understand that Jesus is not like a fireman who saves lives because it is his job, but rather He saves lives because of His great love for us. When we realize that He does not save us so we can owe Him something forever. We could never pay that debt. That is why that debt is forgiven. God wants us to freely fellowship with Him and love with Him and love others with Him.

When we know how He loves us, we become filled with that love and it becomes living water overflowing in our lives. Then the love of God is shed abroad from our hearts by the power of the Holy Spirit. We all must know the Love of God. Once we do, we really begin to enjoy God. We are no longer trying to be drug along hoping to get somewhere; rather we are carried along by His love for us and our love for Him. Truly to know Him is to know His love and when we know His love for us we become free to love Him.
