GOD'S HAND
But don't be angry with yourselves that you did this to me, for God did. He sent me ahead of you to preserve your lives. (Genesis 45:5 NLT)
It is so important for us to learn to look for God’s hand in things that I never tire of encouraging others as well as myself to do it. Joseph could look back and declare that God had arranged everything so that he could save his family. Which is exactly what God did with His son Jesus. He arranged everything so He could save His family. We are His family.
When I look at Joseph’s story, I don’t see God throwing him in the well. I see God keeping his brothers from killing him. I also do not see God making a slave of Joseph, rather I see God keeping him from dieing in the well. There is no doubt that God knew the drought was coming and that he could work it all out the way He did. There is also no doubt that God could have just put Joseph in charge at a later date. As it was, God worked through circumstances that were out of Joseph’s control. Only God could so quickly put Joseph in charge as a servant. How did God do that? He blessed everything that Joseph touched. God wants to give us favor in the same way. If we will be faithful, we will see His blessing spring up around us. But we must believe that is His desire, we must expect it, and we must give the glory to Him. Of course the enemy hates it when God blesses his people, so he tries everything he can to discourage us and cause us to doubt.
Look at Joseph. Everything is going great and then the boss’s wife sets her eyes on him. God did not cause that. In the midst of that, Joseph remained faithful and said he would not sin against God. As a result he is falsely accused. God did not cause that either. God did keep them from killing Joseph. Why do I say that? Well, because Joseph’s boss was the chief executioner. It would have seemed like an ideal place to apply his expertise, but instead he sent him to prison. God did not put him in prison, but He did arrange for him to be in charge of the prison. Remember, when you are in tough circumstances you are still in charge as long as you remember who you are in Christ. No weapon formed against you can prosper. Look for God’s favor no matter what may be going on.
While Joseph was in charge of the prison and God enabled him to tell what the cupbearer’s and the baker’s dreams meant, the cupbearer may have forgotten Joseph, but God did not. He just kept blessing Joseph in prison until the time was right. Yes, remember, God always does everything at just the right time. In the end, Joseph could look back and see the hand of God that had sustained him all along. If ever you feel like God has forgotten about you, just take a moment to imagine how much worse it could be. The very worst thing you can imagine is nothing compared to what the devil wants to do to you. He wants to steal from you, kill you, and destroy you, but God is sustaining you and getting you ready for things more wonderful than you can hope or imagine. Expect it and you will see it. Start praising God right now for His love and His favor.
