GOING SOMEWHERE

God said to him, 'leave your country and your people, and go to the country I will show you'. (Acts 7:3)

As a father, although have not really thought about it that much specifically, I think we all want to be going somewhere. I know you will often hear people say they do not feel like they are getting anywhere! As a child, my dad taught me about obedience, respect, and hard work. I never really gave all that much thought to these things, but the truth is those things were tools that would get me somewhere. He never sat me down and told me anything about it but those things served me well in life. Thanks dad.

The point is that if we will pay attention, we will find many keys along the way that get us to a place without us realizing what was happening. In this passage of scripture, Stephen is telling about how God called Abraham to leave one place and go to another place without telling where he was going. He simply assured him that He would show him. In addition to that, Stephan points out that God never gave him one foot of the land to begin with; He simply promised him that He would ultimately give him all of it. So what did Abraham do? He followed God. He lived his life based on God’s promise. We all know he did not do it perfectly, but he kept believing and allowing God to lead him and God liked it. So here is the deal. If you want to really get somewhere; follow God. Do not miss the now in this life time promises!

Obviously, in order to follow someone, you need to keep your eyes on them. You need to pay attention to them. As a little child I followed my dad. I watched him play baseball. I went with him when he worked on tractors. One day he needed a little arm to reach down into a small space full of grease and extract a broken part and I had the little arm. He made me feel like a master mechanic for helping him, even though my new tea shirt got covered in grease and mom was not exactly happy. Unfortunately, he did not know about following God, so he gave me no real heritage in what I know to be the most important thing in life. Fortunately, I was able to teach him about that before the end of his life. Still, the good things he taught me proved to be great tools that got to me to the place where I met God and began to follow Him.

God has promised His kingdom to everyone who believes. He promises to take us to a place that He will show us. We, like Abraham, must choose whether or not we will follow Him. Lip service will not get us to the place He will take us. Psalm 16 points out that people say God is everything to them and at the same time their lives that there are lot of things that make them happier than what God has to offer. This of course is done in ignorance because most people have no idea that God has anything to offer, except maybe heaven someday.

Look at Abraham! He simply trusted God and along the way he experienced tremendous success. He was blessed beyond measure, and you can be too! With God you can get somewhere. Without God, you just keep going, but you do not really get anywhere. Just to make it clear; it is not about doing, it is about being a follower of God. He is leading. Are you following? Following will always result in doing what God has in mind. He will show us when we get to the place He is leading us. He is the greatest father of all! Let Him take you somewhere.
