GOOD-GOODER-GOODEST
"You fathers--if your children ask for a fish, do you give them a snake instead?"(Luke 11:11)
I have always loved this question that Jesus asked the people because I feel that it paints a really clear picture of God’s intentions. I also feel that it is a reminder to me of the type of father that I should be. I should be careful that I do not pass out snakes to my children or to anyone else for that matter. So what does this have to do with Mother’s Day?
Well, when I met my wife for the first time, I really did not realize I was looking for a wife. I do believe however, that God made that arrangement even though He was probably the furthest thing from my mind at the time. Even when I determined that I wanted to marry her, I really never considered what kind of wife or mother she might be. I just felt like I wanted to keep her around. Fortunately for me, she agreed and then she put up with me for the first seven years of our marriage. And she was good. She was good for me, and good to me. When we had our first child I discovered that she was also a very good mother. We have been blessed with six children, one is in heaven waiting for us and the other five have been blessed to have a great mother. She was even a great mother to Josiah who died shortly after birth. She nearly died giving him life, but God was merciful and though we miss Josiah, I am very grateful to God that my wife stayed with the rest of us.
In this brief reflection, I see a wonderful parallel in walking with God. None of us has any idea how good God really is, especially when we first come to know Him. For most of us, it is simply a case of finally realizing our need of salvation. If we will take the time to nurture the relationship, we will find that God is very kind in putting up with us while we work the kinks out so to speak. As we seek Him, we come to realize that He is gooder than we thought when we started. I know that is poor grammar, but it is a thought that is worth keeping. No matter what may be going on, remember that God is gooder and He will make things better.
As we continue in our walk with God, if we will allow Him to be God in our lives, we ultimately come to the conclusion that He is the goodest. I know, again it is poor grammar, but sometimes those thoughts are the ones that will stick.
I am sad to say, that when I first got married I was of a generation that said, “Hey if I don’t like it after a while I will just end it and move on.” Fortunately for me, my wife did not feel this way! Now, I know that she is the second best thing that ever happened to me and the only thing that can part us is death.
We may from time to time try to forget God, but He never forgets us. He is determined to see that our relationship lasts. He is always ready to answer us when we call. We will never know how good God really is unless we press in. If we will, we will find that He not only keeps getting gooder, but that He is goodest of all. And He makes all things good!
