GREAT GIFTS

In His grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well.(Romans 12:6 NLT)

Do you think that God ever intended for His written word to be used to limit the Holy Spirit in His ministry? The obvious answer to this question is no; and yet to a certain extent I believe this is exactly what has happened.

I know that Paul listed ministry gifts in his letter to the Corinthians, and those gifts pretty well covered all the bases, but again, did God intend for these to be used to limit the body of Christ and in some instances tie the hands of His faithful?

Here is the deal. God has given great gifts to every person. When those gifts are presented to God for empowerment by the Holy Spirit they become super gifts. Every super gift is good for ministry and will minister to different people in different ways. Your smile could be prophetic or the fulfillment of someone’s prayer without you even knowing it. Your hand extended in faith could deliver, heal, comfort, or confirm the presence of God and you may never know about it until you are in heaven visiting with the Lord.

I believe the purpose of this writing is first and foremost to help you understand that your gifts are greater than you think and to set you free from feeling like what you can do does not measure up to what someone else can do. It is also intended to encourage you to desire all the gifts and to be available for God to go even beyond those that are written down or that you feel comfortable with!

God simply does not fit in the boxes that we attempt to put Him in. Seriously, books have been written for the sole purpose of limiting the Holy Spirit. Because Paul was attempting reign in the Corinthian church, people decided to make rules for the operation of the Holy Spirit in a service. Why in the world would we want to stop Him? We certainly need to be sensitive to the leading of the Spirit and discerning of what is God, but in doing this we need to be very careful that we do not quench the Spirit.

Since God is the giver and the one who knows what is best, we should let Him be the one to lead in all things. We should all be available at all times and confident in the abilities that God has given us. There is nothing that can compare to the presence of God and nothing as precious to God as a believer trusting Him and acting upon His word.

This is what Jesus did all the time. He understood that He and His Father were one! He was our example. He was not limited by anything or anyone. He said we should go and do what He did. He held little children. He raised the dead. He fed the multitudes. He empowered others. Everyone has gifts and believers have super gifts! We need only to be prepared to act when the Holy Spirit directs us.
