GUILTY
You have tested my thoughts and examined my heart in the night. You have scrutinized me and found nothing amiss, for I am determined not to sin in what I say.(Psalm 17:3NLT)
Well, the first thing I have to say in starting this is, “OUCH!” I would be lying if I said I had this portion of scripture conquered. One thing I have found though, is if you want to win, you have to get in the fight. So I have determined that this is they way it is going to be. I say that with a large, “Lord help me!”
As you probably noticed, this scripture covers two very active parts of our lives. Our thought lives and our mouths. Sometimes my thought life is very much in control, other times it seems non existent which unfortunately gives my mouth free reign. Other times, I have my mouth securely shut, but I have quite a fight with the things that come to mind and try to get out my mouth. You know what I mean don’t you. There are times when you just blurt things out. Then there are those times when you know you need to keep your mouth shut, but your mind goes into overdrive. Between the two battles, you begin to feel like you may as well throw in the towel and forget winning this one.
Well, don’t do it. The very fact that you want to win is a great sign. It means you are wanting your life to be transformed and that you want what God wants more than what you want. Remember, no one can win the battle for you or me. We have to get in it ourselves, then rely on Him for strength and wisdom to win.
I want to warn you, once you start thinking about serious victory in this area, don’t be surprised if it seems like all you do is fail. The enemy does not want you to win this one. This victory opens so many doors in the kingdom of God that you become extra dangerous to the darkness all around.
There will always be things that people do to us or around us that cause us to think things that are less than lovely or of good report. These same things will make us want to say things that will not help anything. But God says He can take care of that, if we can take it to Him. May the Lord help us all. Do you ever find that you do in fact talk to God about these sorts of things, but then you find yourself talking to a lot of others as well. Or rehearsing in your mind what you would like to say or do to get even.
We all know that this only hurts us. It keeps us awake, it makes us miserable to ourselves and those around us, and it really messes with our witness to the world around us. Truly, the tongue is an unruly and powerful member of our body. It can spread light or darkness, life or death. It can bless or curse, and we know that what we sow is what we reap.
Thank you Lord that we do not have to do this in our own strength. Read Philippians 4:8 & 9. It is a key to knowing God’s peace, which is wholeness, lacking nothing.
