HABITATION
Because you have made the Lord... even the Most High, your habitation (Ps. 91:9 NKV)
Many years ago I was taught to read five Psalms a day along with the Proverb of the day. For at least 15 years there were very few days that I missed doing that. That was always the warm up to regular reading of the rest of the Word of God. Although I follow other study plans now, I frequently return to that pattern and I am always blessed when I do. Recently when I was reading the Psalms, this verse rose from the page into my heart in a new way.
I thought, “wow, talk about habitat for humanity!” If we would all simply make the Lord our habitation we would no longer wonder what is going on in this world! The fact is that one day we will all enter that rest, but for now only those who choose to enter understand the benefits.
The truth is, that the Lord is always present. God does not show up when we create the right atmosphere. He fills the earth. There is nowhere that we can go and not find Him there. He is present. Sometimes you will hear people say that the Lord is present like it is something new, but the truth is He was present before we noticed.
Have you ever been busy doing something and someone came into the room without you knowing and just stood there? Then after a while you realized they were there and you wondered how long they had been standing there. Well, God is always present! He is present waiting for us to fellowship together. He wants us to experience Him! However, He does not want us to limit that experience to when we gather together, He wants us to make His presence our habitation.
Moses walked up into the cloud to behold a bit of God’s glory. He had to trust God as he entered the unknown place in the cloud. We too must trust God and enter that place where He is our habitation. There is a preparation for habitation that is developed as we make a habit of partaking of God’s presence. I realized as I read the Psalms that they are in fact a preparation for His presence. They remind us of His greatness and faithfulness. They stir us up to trust in the Lord with all our hearts. They build our faith and as we go we look up and realize He is there. He is the living Word.
When we wake in the night, He is there. As we drive in our vehicles, ride a bike, run down the road, perform our jobs, or wait at a traffic light, He is there. The door to His presence is always open! We don’t work up some atmosphere that attracts God, we break free from the things that hold us back and run in to Him. As we come to understand this in greater and greater measure, we will find ourselves making Him our habitation. We won’t just stop in for a visit once in while but we will refuse to be satisfied with anything less than Him. Then no matter what is going on, we will not need to run to Him because we remain in Him and expect Him to be who He is. Read the rest of Psalm 91 and consider what God has for you in His habitat. Make Him your habitation.
