HERS, THEIRS, AND OURS
But He needed to go through Samaria. (John 4:3 NKJ)
I realize that this is an obscure verse in a chapter of the Bible that is full of wonderful revelations, but it seemed good to the Lord to talk to me about this verse. The question that came to my mind was, “why did He need to go through Samaria?” It could be because it was the most direct route; however, looking at the map it would have been easier to just take the boat. We know it was not an easy walk, because Jesus was weary from the travel. So why did He need to go that way?
Well, I think it was for the woman at the well, for the disciples, and for us. In a sense it was for the Lord’s sake as well because He was compelled to do the will of His Father. It was after all nourishment to Him.
For the woman at the well, it was obvious. She was longing for the Lord and the Lord met her need. She was tired of going to the well, of failed marriages, and I think of life in general. We know she must have given much thought to the Lord and to worship because she brought it up. By the time they were done, she was presented with the truth that He was the one that everyone was looking for, and glory to God she believed it and took off to spread the good news.
Next on the list of beneficiaries, were the disciples. At first they wondered what in the world Jesus was doing talking to that woman. Well, they thought it but had enough sense not to say it. I wonder if they overheard what she had to say as she went. Whatever the case, this incident started them on a steeper learning curve. Not only did Jesus talk to her, He stayed in that place and confirmed the very thing she went and told the people. Many had believed what she said, but they were even more convinced after hearing Jesus for themselves.
We have the opportunity to be the greatest beneficiaries of this stop along the road; if we will receive it that is. First we need to yield to those things that God puts in our hearts to do. I believe we all sense a need to do certain things from time to time. Of course if we wait long enough the need will subside. If we succumb to the fact that it would be easier to do something different we may bypass it completely.
Next we can learn that it does not need to make sense to anyone else as long as it is of the Lord. Only He knows for sure what great things may come of it. The anointing on that truth went right with the woman and touched the hearts of others as well. This brings us to another obvious need that was met. Through this experience, a great truth was put into motion and delivered to the generations to come. It was here that Jesus reveled that all who worship must worship in Spirit and in truth. We need to follow Jesus command to go and make disciples revealing all the things that He taught us.
