HIS LOVING COVENANT

O God, we meditate on your unfailing love as we worship in your Temple. (Ps. 48:9) Their hearts were not loyal to Him. They did not keep His covenant...for they did not believe God or trust Him to care for them. (Psalm 78:37 & 22)

Isn’t it good to know that God’s love never fails? How sweet it is when we have the confidence to say that we have no fear because our daddy loves us and we know He will take care of everything. Unfortunately, we do not always remember that. This is probably because we spend more time dwelling on what is against us than we do on the One who loves us and is for us.

As we read today’s scripture we see that Israel forgot God’s love and His promise to them. They forgot His miracles and did not keep His covenant. They did not believe He would take care of them. Isn’t it amazing to think that what God really wants from us is for us to believe that He loves us and that He will take care of us?

God made His first covenant with Abram before He changed his name to Abraham. All Abram was required to do was believe God and he was considered righteous. That covenant never changed. Well actually, it did. Jesus made an even better covenant with us!

As I have sought the Lord desiring to make sure that I do my best for Him, He has pointed out how simple my part really is. Since a covenant brings all that each party has to the table, it is easy for me to see that His side of the table has a lot more on it than mine. In fact, what I have is nothing in comparison. Still, what I have is His, and what He has is mine.

For His part, He has even done things to make my part easier. For instance, Psalm 18:36 tells me that He has given me a wide path for my feet so that I do not slip. If I do, it is wide enough so that I have room to recover rather than fall off. At the same time, I do not want to use the wide path to wander, only so that I can walk without fear.

God reminded me of a personal example of His covenant at work in my life. There was a time when someone felt that God wanted them to do something that involved my family and me. I prayed about it and felt that it was God as well. They said they would take care of everything. We just needed to show up. We were so well taken care of that I felt guilty at times. God was using these folks to lavish His love on us. All we had to do was present ourselves and do our part, and they were more than happy to do what God wanted them to do.

We were both blessed, but I felt we were the most blessed. This is the way that God intends His covenant to work. We bring ourselves in obedience; He takes care of the rest! Now that is a loving covenant.
