HIS WILL AND HIS PROMISES

For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God you may receive the promise. (Hebrews 10:36 NKJV)

I believe that the vast majority of all people everywhere since time began would prefer to enjoy all the promises of God! Everyone would like to enjoy a very fruitful life of health, wealth, and happiness. Everyone would like to have peace like a river. After all, no matter how many material things you possess, if you have no peace you are simply that much more frustrated.

Who would not want to be blessed going out and coming in with their barns overflowing and enjoying the favor of God? Even the devil would like that, but he blew his chance. In fact, much of our society today would like everything just handed to them and it is tearing our world apart. It is easy to see why God put some guidelines on things. He never intended that people be just takers. His plan was that we be givers just like Him. And He is “The” greatest giver of all time!

This verse says that we need endurance so that after we have done the will of God we can receive the promise. We of course we must first believe the promise of God. When we believe the promise, then we will desire to take the first step in bringing it to pass. We will do the will of God.

For instance, in order to receive salvation, we must do the will of God and receive Christ. We must call upon His name. We cannot just say, “Oh yes I believe in Jesus;” we must call on His name. We must be born again! That is the will of God and after we have done the will of God we can receive the promise. Of course there is no waiting involved in that promise taking effect. That one is instant and puts us in line for the rest!

There are other promises that require some endurance. Just as it takes some time for a seed to produce a crop and then a harvest, there may be some things that will require some patient endurance on our part. But if we have done the will of God we can be sure the promise is on the way. Hebrews chapter eleven tells of generations gone by that died still looking forward to some of the promises. Joseph died looking forward to his bones moving out of Egypt. Looking forward with joy surely beats looking back with regret. Jesus did the will of God and looked beyond the cross with joy!

Rejoice forever more! Despise not prophesying! Pray without ceasing! Another way to say this might be, “Quit complaining, receive the word of God and pray!” For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Let’s be doers of the Word of God. If we are, then we can endure with confidence that we will receive the promise of God. It is better to die confident than live without faith in the promises of God.
