HISTORY REMINDER
And the hand of the people of Israel pressed harder and harder against Jabin the king of Canaan, until they destroyed Jabin king of Canaan. (Judges 4:24)
God tells us that all scripture is God breathed and good for instruction among other things. The names Deborah, Barak, Sisera, and Jael are probably at least a little familiar to most who have read the Bible. When I read this recently I had this thought of getting Jabin gone.
Jabin came as a result of the people once again doing evil in the Lords sight. Each time the people did this, and things got bad enough, they cried to the Lord and He would send another judge to deliver them. This time, it was Deborah and she sent for a man named Barak and told him to gather an army of ten thousand men to go against nine hundred iron chariots. The promise was that God would give them the victory. It is really a good story. You can read it all in Judges Chapter 4. So what can we learn from this?
Well, I think we occasionally run into Jabins in our lives. They may come because we leave a door unlocked or they may come knocking and we let down our guard, for whatever reason, they show up. The important thing is to recognize them and press them out.
A confirmation of this thinking came as I was reading a book that made reference to an old message titled, “Sinners in the hands of an angry God.” I have heard of it often, but do not recall ever reading it, so this time I did. Wow! It was stirring to say the least. The overall picture was that until we are born again, we are dangling by a fine thread or treading on thin ice ready to fall into hell and the only thing holding us up is an angry God. He hates unrighteousness. Fortunately He hates hell more. The thing is we need is to draw near to God as soon as possible because we do not know when we might die. They say that message changed a nation.
As I read it I thought about my life before coming to Jesus and that message would have fit me to a tee. I do remember once thinking as I read briefly about how to know you are born again that if if was true I was in trouble. I shrugged that off for a bit but fortunately not completely.
We really do need to guard against laziness in our faith. We need to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit and respond when He shows us a glimpse of a Jabin in our lives.
Unforgiveness, anger, greed, bitterness, even loneliness, and a long list of other things can be seeds ready to sprout and take over our lives. We need to aware of this and act quickly to press them out. Press into Jesus and there is no room for these things.
We certainly do not need to think about hell all the time, but we also cannot forget about the enemy. We are told to be alert so we can stand against the wiles of the devil. Give no ground. Continually draw closer to God. Fear not He is for you cheering you on.
