HOLD THE COURSE

Elisha answered, "Yes I know. Don't talk about it." (2 Kings 2:5 ERV)

There is a time to talk and a time to keep going without all the talking. As we have discussed the power of God and using the power of God I have been thinking about the things that derail our faith. Of course there are any of a number of things that jump in the way as we attempt to hold the course, but one thing that is always involved is talking about the wrong things.

Remember, it was a discussion in the garden that brought what God really wanted for Adam and Eve and all of us to a screeching halt. In the same way, discussing in the wrong way the things that we have asked and God has promised can throw our ship way off course.

In this particular situation with Elisha, Elisha was on a mission to get the double portion of his mentors anointing. Of course he was saddened by the fact that this would be his last day with him. Of course he would have liked to have talked Elijah into talking God out of taking him that day. Of course he had many thoughts going through his head, but he was determined to make this the best day it could be. It was because of this that he refused to discuss the biggest distraction to success.

How often do you think you have discussed your way right out of what you were once certain of? We all have done this and sometimes we are not even aware of what we have done. We can be certain that we have heard from God and with too much discussion we become convinced that maybe we did not hear from God after all. In fact we can be convinced that it makes more sense not to do what we thought we knew God wanted us to do. We can even convince ourselves that we were fortunate we did not hold that course.

Now I am not saying there will never be a time when our course does not change, I am just saying that we need to be aware the too much discussion can have bad repercussions on our course of faith.

I remember the prophet who God told not to eat until he got home and another prophet came and convinced him that God told him something different. He died as a result, and the old prophet felt bad about it but that did not change the result of failing to hold the course.

If we are going to talk about it, it would be best to talk to God and ask Him to tell us again just how this is going to work. We should go over our notes and reminders that God has given us. Above all things, we should put the most effort into convincing ourselves that God is able rather than reasoning with ourselves or others as to why it is probably a bad idea. If we will put the effort into holding the course, we will behold the glory of God and in so doing become stronger and stronger in our faith and confidence in God.
