HOW ARE YOU

And this is the secret: Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing His glory. (Colossians 1:27b NLT)

How are you? This is a question that is daily in our lives. We ask others and they ask us. The responses vary from person to person. We sometimes respond with a great deal of thought because we have been considering how we are doing since we got up in the morning or perhaps we did not sleep because that was all we could think about. Other times we just have a preconditioned response because it is what we always say. I have from time to time thought about the responses that I give as well as the ones I receive but not as I have considered it today and for good reason; today the Lord asked me, “How are you?”

At first I wondered if it was to be the subject for the first Sunday of the New Year, but He quickly cut that off asking me the same question again. Well He knows everything so I had to come up with an answer. After many different responses and considerations I finally said, “You know Lord, so tell me, how am I.” It was a good try, but it did not work. He still wanted His question answered.

So I began to answer from His Word. I am supplied, protected, healed and delivered. I am favored and blessed. You lead me in straight paths and guide me into all truth. With this and many more examples I determined that I probably answered the question at least in part. How would you answer? After God finished with me it did become a question for us all.

The picture I received was one of two roads. One is the road, “I am” and the other is the road, “I am supposed to be.” These roads run in every sector of life, but for today we will just discuss how it pertains to the Christian life.

As we draw closer to Jesus we learn more and more about how we are supposed to be and what we are supposed to have. The thing is we keep looking at how we feel or what we have and we become confused. The supposed to road is filled with confusion. There are a lot of signs but they are confusing. They say one thing and illustrate with other things. They agree with the “I am” road in part, but we are always reminded it is not that way. Are you following me here?

The roads are so close, but the trip is entirely different. One road is smooth and assurance overrides every bump. Of course there are bumps but on the, “I am” road we can confidently put them in the rear view mirror. This is not the case when we are stuck on the, “Supposed to be road.” We all find ourselves there at times. We know it is not supposed to be the way it is. We know it is supposed to be different. Jesus made the way to leave the supposed to be road and enter the “I am” road simple and instant. How can we escape the confusion of “Supposed to be”? The same way we entered the kingdom in the first place; by faith. How are you?
