HOW ARE YOU TODAY
"Have salt in yourselves, and have peace with one another."(Mark 9:49c NKJ)
Recently, I walked into a gas station to pay for my purchase and was greeted by a not so friendly attendant. He never said a word; he just pointed at the card reader like I was a big inconvenience. So as I slid my card I asked him in a friendly manner, “How are you today.” His response left me momentarily speechless. He said, “Same I was yesterday.” I wondered if someone who looked like me made him mad yesterday or what! I did not know whether to tell him I was sorry to hear that, or if this was his idea of as good as it gets or what! Finally I said, well I did not get to see you yesterday so I did not know that. He never looked at me, never said thank you, and I went on about my day.
In a strange sort of way, he made a lasting impression on me. I felt badly for the guy. I considered going back in and seeing if I could help his day, but he had made it quite clear that he was not interested in talking. Sad to say, there are a lot of people who are in that frame of mind, and until they choose to change it, there is not much we can do. I did not say there was nothing we could do, just that there is not much we can do for them. We can however make sure that we do not feel or act the same way!
Remember, in the parable of the sower, the seed is all good! It is the Word of God and the Word of God is always good; it just lands in different places. This is true all the time. There are some seeds that we just let blow away, some we really like but then do not do much with them, some that really take hold until they run into a conflict with our personal desires or other life circumstances, and some that we nurture right through the harvest. The thing to remember is that it is all good and never loses the ability to produce life. God can use the most amazing means to trigger the life that is in the Word.
Look at Peter. He threw it all aside and denied the Lord. It took a rooster talking to him to remind Him of the truth. So, how are you today? Are you listening for the voice of the Lord? Are you anticipating His appearance in or through your life today? To be the same today as yesterday is good, if yesterday was full of the presence of Lord and expecting even more! It is not so good if yesterday was not so good just like you expected and today you expect more of the same.
This man’s response was like a rooster crow to me. God used it to remind me not to let any seed get away and search in the corners for any I have left lying around. I realize that I could just as quickly be in a bad state today and looking forward to worse tomorrow.
The Lord desires that I have salt in my life and that I be a purveyor of His peace. God has given these good gifts to those who believe so that we can pass them on. We have an abundance of seed available to provide salt and peace for our lives and the whole world. How are you today?
