HOW CAN I

Do you understand what you are reading? How can I when there is no one to instruct me? And He begged Phillip to come up and sit with him. (Acts 8:30-31 NLT)

Jesus told us that we were fortunate if we understood the scripture. When we do begin to understand the Word of God, the promises just fly off the pages. In Psalm 37 we have the promise of peace and prosperity of life if we will trust the Lord. Proverbs chapter 4 promises life and health to those who understand the Word of God. No wonder God tells us over and over again, “get understanding.” I know for a fact that I need more understanding every day. And I know that I can get it by seeking the Lord. That being said, lets turn our focus to those who do not have understanding. After all, they are the ones that Jesus told us to go to.

I think that each of us who have come to know the Lord can remember when the Word of God was dull and lifeless to us. We can all remember when we may have sat in a church and heard someone read from the book and it bored us to a point of looking forward to being somewhere else. It must have been an amazing thing in the days of the Old Testament when all of Israel would stand and listen as the whole book of the law was read. Can you imagine even sitting and listening as someone reads the book of Leviticus, let alone the whole book of the law?

Well, in Acts, we read about how Phillip left a big revival to go to the desert and sow a seed in the life a man who was traveling. He comes upon the man who is reading the scripture and asks him if he understands what he is reading. The man says how can I if no explains it. Once we get understanding, we need to help others to understand what God is saying. We need to help people with the same help that we have received. If people are troubled, we need to be able to share how God has comforted us. If people have a physical need, we need to share how God has healed or provided for us. We need to have our eyes open for opportunities to explain just how real and wonderful God is.

Proverbs 4:18 says, “that the ways of the righteous are like the first gleam of dawn that shines ever brighter until the full light of day.” As I read this I sensed God saying that as we live the truth, we do shine a light that can and will break forth in peoples lives. We need to have confidence in what God does with the seed we sow and the light we show.

God is happy to build our confidence by confirming His promises. As our confidence grows then the light flows. This world needs to understand the living Word of God. How will they understand if there is no one willing to explain it. We must all be willing to go to that desert and find that person God has waiting. The desert could be the person at the desk next to yours at work. It could be someone in your own family or it could be a total stranger on the street. It could be someone on the other side of the world. It could be anyone. One thing is sure, there is someone waiting for a glimmer of light and understanding. Let’s make sure that we offer a clear message and true light.
