HOW DEEP IS IT

Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. (Matthew 13:44 NKJ)

Have you ever found yourself saying, “I know I put it right here, but now I can’t find it?” It is amazing how things can disappear. Keeping with the study of the measure God gives us and what a treasure it is, I want to take a look at how deep the treasure is buried and how it got buried in the first place.

This scripture tells of the person who finds the treasure, hides the treasure, and gives up everything to own the field where the treasure is, and then ideally goes and enjoys the treasure. But what if he can’t find the place where he hid the treasure? What if someone saw him hide it and then stole it?

We know from the word of God that life with Christ is our treasure. Everything we could ever need is wrapped up in Him. When our eyes are finally opened to this fact, we open our hearts to receive Christ and start on a wonderful journey. We do in fact find the treasure. Things in our life begin to change. Everything in us and around us does not instantly become perfect, but often times we are so consumed by love for God that we do not really notice the imperfect things so much.

However, over time we may lose sight of the great treasure that we discovered. It may begin to be buried under all sorts of debris. An enemy comes and distracts us. He points out all that we gave up and all that we do not have. If we are not prepared, we will actually believe him. I am amazed when I hear people who are focused on all they gave up for the Lord. How can we feel like we gave something up when what we had was nothing compared to what now have. God never removes anything without giving something far great to replace it. Of course if all we can see is what we don’t have, we will never have the expectation of God giving us something even better. When the disciples asked Jesus what they would get after they had given up everything, Jesus told them they would have a 100 fold in this life time and in the end eternal life.

So what things have we allowed to cover our confidence and hope? How deep is our treasure buried? Remember, the treasure never loses its value, but it cannot be used as long as it is covered up. So many precious Christians seem to stand by the spot where the treasure is and never really dig to uncover it. You encourage them with God’s good plans and they can only see what God has not done. They want someone to get the dirt off, but no sooner is it uncovered than they cover it right back up with tales of past losses.

There has to come a time when we forget what is behind and reach for what is ahead. We know those things behind cannot be God’s fault and we will do ourselves no favors dwelling there and blaming ourselves. It does not matter who stole it, or if we misplaced it, or anything else. What matters is whether or not we are willing dig down, pick it up, and put it on display all for the glory of God.
