HOW DO WE MEASURE
And the Lord said to Moses, "Has the Lord's arm been shortened? (Numbers 11:23 NKJ)
The question of the day is, “How do we measure?” There are actually many scriptures that we could look up that talk to us about measuring. We are to use fair measures. The way that we measure will be measured back to us. In this instance God asked Moses about the length of His arm. In other words, God was asking Moses how he could even question God’s ability after everything he had already witnessed. We often shake our heads at the way the people doubted, but Moses questioned upon first hearing of the Lord’s plan. We all have those moments, don’t we?
So here we have the people complaining and God saying, “Ok. They want meat, they will have meat.” When Moses asks Him how in the world this could possibly happen, the Lord asks Moses to consider the length of His arm. If it was good for Moses, it is probably good for us. So, how do we measure the Lord’s arm? Could the way we measure possibly affect our lives?
Some might say that we have nothing to do with what God does. He just does what He does when He wants to do it and we are along for the ride. If that were the case why would we be told to ask of the Lord? Why would we be told to speak to the mountains? Why would we be told to give and it will given unto us? Why would we need to ask Jesus to come into our hearts? I guess He would just pick and choose a few now and then!
Remember. The depth of faith determines the height of the flight. The measure that we assess to the Lord’s arm is the measure that we will access. Now obviously if the Lord has already determined what He intends to do in a given situation, we will have the privilege of witnessing just how far off we were in our measurement. This is what Moses observed after God told Him that he would see whether He could do what He said or not! Moses had one of those oops moments!
Jesus made it clear hundreds of years later that nothing is impossible with God. His arm has not been shortened nor has His power been diminished. However our measure of His arm can restrict His response to our needs. If His arm is too short to heal, then we are limited to the arm of the medical field to heal. If His arm is too short to protect, then we have only the arm of the law to protect us. If His arm is too short to provide then we have limitations on our provision and so on.
When I was a child I never considered my father’s arms. When I grew older, I found out the hard way how strong they were. As a young man, my father’s arms grew weaker and mine grew stronger. Later I appreciated the love of his arms. As a new Christian, it was much same. I was glad just to be born again and never considered all that was in His arms. Later I could see that He could do anything He wanted. Later, though I never said it, my actions indicated that His arms must be too short for some things. Now as I understand more of how deep His love is and fall more deeply in love with Him, I see more and more that His arms have unlimited reach. Won’t you join me in discovering just how unlimited the measure of His arms is?
