HOW DOES YOUR LAMP WORK
Your eye is a lamp for your body. A pure eye lets sunshine into your soul. But an evil eye shuts out the light and plunges you into darkness. If the light you think you have is really darkness, how deep that darkness will be! (Matthew 6:22-23 NLT)
I read a quote in a school that said something to effect that your attitude is like a paintbrush, it can color any situation. I thought that fit very will with what the Lord said in Matthew about our eye being a lamp for our body. Not only will what we see affect our lives, but often how we see things will as well. We may have a different attitude about things at different times.
We seldom think about how what we see affects our lives when we do not know Christ. However, when we come to know Him we begin to see things differently. Suddenly some things that we see penetrate our very souls. Things that we once laughed at or maybe even longed for, now offend us. Personally, I don’t think Jesus was talking as much about the physical aspect of our vision as He was about the spiritual part.
There is after all a very special thing that God gives us when he opens the eyes of our understanding. He enables us to see things that others would never notice. He allows us to see with eyes of compassion for those who are blind like we once were. He offers us understanding in every situation. Paul once said that he could see that the man had faith to be healed. There are times when you can just see how hungry, or how resistant people are to the gospel.
Not only do our eyes act as a lamp for our own soul, but they also help us to provide light for others who do not yet see. The thing we all must be careful to do is make sure we keep walking in the light. The way to make sure we are in the right light and that we shine the right light is to stay in close relationship with the Jesus.
This scripture goes on to say that we can have an evil eye and that the light we have or the way we see things can taint our perception as well as our reflection. For instance, we are now involved in a war on terror with people who think that they have light. Their light tells them that there is a reward for murdering innocent people. How deep is the darkness when the light they have is really so dark.
That is of course the extreme of light being darkness but there are other more subtle ways that the enemy can deceive us and leave us wandering in darkness thinking we have it all together. And as we do that we may lead others into the same darkness.
There is only one true light, and that light is Jesus Christ. If we walk in His light and allow it to shine on our souls, our batteries will be charged with light that will light the world. God help us to recognize when our eye is evil and tainting our attitude and actions.
