HOW GREAT IS YOUR GOD

He was fully convinced that God is able to do whatever He promises. (Romans 4:21 NLT)

We all know that God is great in theory. In other words if we are Christians we would agree that God is pretty amazing. We would never admit that He is not much to us! And yet our attitudes may in fact reveal that we really see Him as mighty in heaven only, and if we get there we will enjoy time with Him.

What we do not realize is that our perception of God directly affects the level to which God operates in our lives. How great He actually is never changes, but He can only be as big in our everyday lives as we make Him. The attitude of Elisha after He picked up Elijah’s mantle comes to my mind. He slapped the water and asked where the God of Elijah was, and the God of Elijah showed up. From that point on God was the God of Elisha and he never looked back.

Can we accept that God really does respond according to our faith? We can certainly agree that if we see him as savior he will save us! Why then do we limit him as protector, provider, healer, deliverer and etc? We believe that whoever calls on Him will be saved. So we know we need to call. Why then, when it comes to the other aspects of God do we think that we have no say or responsibility?

Abraham was fully convinced that God could and would do whatever He promised. He was so convinced that even when he went up the mountain to sacrifice his son, he knew he would come back down with him alive.

If we see God as big, powerful, interested, and involved in our lives; he will be. If we see Him as loving, healing, and giving; He will be. On the other hand, if we see Him as distant and keep Him at a distance; He will patiently wait to be asked to draw near! As our expectations of God increase, so will His confirmation of those expectations. As a result, doubt will begin to lose space in our lives and we like Elisha will know that God is who God says He is to all who call.

Don’t misunderstand me here. We do not control God; we simply control the volume or the flow of His promises toward us. When we are confident, we cease to expect God not to answer. We do not look for reasons that He might not be interested. Instead we plan to see Him reveal Himself. Elisha never again asked where the God of Elijah was. Abraham remained confident till his death. The same is true for countless others from then until now. It can and should be true for us as well!

So, there is no doubt that God is great. The question is how great is your God? This is a question that we all must answer for ourselves. Are we ready to step out in faith and remove all the limits we have place upon God and His Word?
