HOW WE GROW

We grow only as we get our nourishment and strength from God. (Colossians 2:19 NLT)

It is God who made us and gave us the gifts and abilities that we have. It is God who gives us life and intends for us to have abundant life. Our growth in life is directly related to the nourishment and strength we get from God, for true life is found only in God. Even those who do not know God owe any real life they experience to the goodness of God. The Bible says He makes the rain to fall on those inside and those outside of His kingdom. The proof of this is in the fact that when people become hungry for more in life if they do not settle for anything less than the best, they ultimately end up in a relationship with God. Nothing else can truly satisfy. Testimony after testimony from people who searched everywhere reveals that ultimately it was only God who could satisfy the longing in their heart.

We grow according to what we eat. God offers nourishment day in day out. We may fast from food, but we should never fast from the word of God. If we are not reading it, then we should be snacking on what He is saying to us as we go through the day. We should always be prepared to nibble. God is like ice cream. There is always room for ice cream. If you are not an ice cream eater then use something else to fill in that blank.

Let me give you an example. Sunday in Church, we talked about telling all. But before we got to that we read how the apostles turned people and things over to the care of the Lord in whom they had come to trust. That statement suddenly became nourishment to me. It was going through my mind even as I spoke other words that God gave me to preach. That thought just kept coming up.

I was nourished as I considered whether or not I was truly turning things over to the Lord’s care. I was challenged as I considered whether or not I had come to trust in the Lord. I was encouraged as I realized that if I turned things over and truly trusted God, I could be sure He would not fail me. The nourishment continues as I consider how we come to trust someone in the first place. We first must give them an opportunity to prove themselves. Well I know that He has proven Himself over and over. I also know that He has never failed me. This was the same thing the apostles used as their basis for trust. Paul had been blinded and God restored his sight. He had tormented Christians and God had forgiven him. He had no doubt that God could heal and forgive others as well.

Trusting God builds us up. Hearing God gives us the opportunity to allow Him to prove Himself true to His word. Be alert for those opportunities to feast or even to snack on the growth enhancers of God. Practice trusting Him until you are so accustomed to turning things over to God that you just pass them to Him like you would pass the potatoes to someone who asks for them. He did ask us to pass our cares to Him because He cares for us. I desire to grow in this truth and then pass it on. How about you?
